The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
If you don't mind dealing with kinda crappy graphics and an old combat system, the Baldur's Gate games are awesome and you can get them cheap at Good Old Games. The second one is especially excellent, one of the best-written RPGs ever. The combat is kinda similar to Dragon Age 1's overhead tactical mode and in fact DA was meant to be a spiritual successor to BG2.
Really, if you haven't played any of Bioware's games, that's probably a good starting point. They're not really all low fantasy like mount and blade, but I can't think of too many games that are.
The Drakensang series might be good for you. It's based on The Black Eye instead of Dungeons & Dragons, but it's roughly the same fantasy setting. It's probably as high fantasy as Dragon Age, but I'm not sure as I haven't played it [yet].
The problem with Mount and Blade is that there are few games out there that are like Mount and Blade. I'm not sure why, either.
On a different vein, you could try Sid Meier's Pirates! (one of the best games ever) I think the devs of M&B stated that they took a lot of inspiration from the style of play in Sid Meier's Pirates. It's not medieval, but it's certainly based in a more "realistic" style than the high fantasy offerings people have been posting here.
Gothic has a similar (although inferior, in my opinion) combat style to Mount and Blade, but it's also more fantasy and less realistic.
Bladestorm is a console game by KOEI. It's similar to Dynasty Warriors (as you might expect), but it's based on a bastardization of the Hundred Years War. Definitely not historical, but you aren't going to run around smacking hundreds of slow-moving asian men with sticks. There's more of an emphasis of leading companies of warriors into battle than hack-and-slash with hero units.

I love this trilogy. Very in depth, detail oriented, and a great story. It's old games like this that make me want to dual-boot my MacBook Pro.
There are some low-magic Persistent Worlds around as well, based on the Neverwinter Nights game... ours isn't one of them, but we are low magic-item.
Hit the link in my sig... you might like what you find! Even if we aren't your thing, there are some worlds out there catering more closely to what you're looking for.
If you are prepared to go retro, try Ultima 7. Be warned, it takes a little effort to get working on modern computers, but is still unmatched in many ways, such as extreme detail and freedom.

For really retro try SotSB.
Secret Of The Silver Blades? If you're going to do that, start with Pool Of Radiance. SotSB is the third in the trilogy.
