iPhone 3GS - WiFi and App Questions

Hi dudes and dudettes,

I recently upgraded my mobile to a shiny 3GS (yay) and I'm loving it to bits, however it's the first properly web-enabled phone I've ever owned. So just a few questions as a new (and ignorant) user.

(i) When I hook my iPhone onto my home routers wifi (or wifi anywhere for that matter) am I using my phones allowance (I'm on 500mb p/m with Vodafone) or am I free of that as I'm piggybacking onto a different signal?

and

(ii) I'm loving the App Store, and have a few apps already. However, there are literally tons of Apps to get through to find the really good ones. Anyone suggest any good Apps at all? Really digging stuff like iClone, Raptr Mobile, Plants Vs Zombies and the NFL Monitor App. Anything good for a gamer/internet obssessive or any just brilliantly clever or entertaining apps I should take a look at?

If you're on wifi, then no, you're not using against your plan. You can use wifi all month long and never have it count against your plan. It's only when you're on 3G that you're data is counting.

To partially answer part two: for apps, I find Dragon dictation and epicurious to be good free apps. Dragon lets you write large texts and email without typing, and Epicuirious lets you search recipies and make grocery lists. The motion x gps is really nice for walking/hiking/biking what have you, does cost some money though.

As for Games, the only free game that I play a lot of is urban rivals which is a collectible card game. It is fun pvp, but it takes a bit of time before you can start to get a deck that is competitive for tournaments together.

Other games that I like on the phone are Battleheart, Battle for Wesnoth, Civ Rev. Which are all stategy games I guess. My friends are all addicted to angry birds which is more of a puzzle game if I had to classify it. I wrote up some reviews of them here if you want more info on the ones I mentioned.
