In Vermont
Every Vermonter could sign up for state-financed health insurance under a bill passed by the House on Thursday that would put the state on a path to a single-payer health care system by the middle of this decade.

"This bill takes our state one step closer to a system that ensures that all Vermonters have access to the care they deserve and contains costs," House Speaker Shap Smith said shortly after the House passed the bill 92-49.

The measure now goes to the Senate, where it is expected to pass, but with some possible changes.

Our friendly northern neighbors know all about single-payer health care, but for the uninitiated, here's a primer (from an admittedly biased source):
Single-payer is a term used to describe a type of financing system. It refers to one entity acting as administrator, or “payer.” In the case of health care, a single-payer system would be setup such that one entity—a government run organization—would collect all health care fees, and pay out all health care costs.

And from Wikipedia:
Single-payer health care is the financing of health care from a single insurance pool, which in all existing and proposed cases is government run. Under a single-payer system, universal health care for an entire population is financed from a pool to which many parties--employees, employers, the state--have contributed. Single-payer is a market in which one buyer faces many sellers (monopsony).

Vermont's governor, Peter Shumlin, campaigned for office on implementing single-payer health care. It has to jump through some hurdles because of existing US law (including Obamacare), but at this point none of that seems insurmountable. Vermont activists have been fighting for single-payer for a long time. There are also active campaigns for single-payer health care in California, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and New York, and there's at least some presence of the movement in every state in the USA.

I think it's pretty rad.

I don't wanna kill anybody. I don't like bullies. I don't care where they're from.

Same system we've got here in Australia

Our single payer is called Medicare which is clearly listed as a section of your income tax. If you use it more than a specific amount you pay a little extra, and if you earn less than a specific amount you pay a little less.

Also individuals or familys are welcome to purchase additional health insurance which can be used to recieve care in more expensive "private" hospitals and can also contribute to things which medicare doesn't cover like dental, optical, physiotherapy etc etc or things which medicare only contributes part of the overall cost like specialist doctors, X-Rays or blood tests and the like etc etc

    it's a great system.

I'm proposing a single-payer health care system in which all claims are paid by Ted Johnson of Beaver Creek Minnesota.

    From Cracked today
In the middle of the heated health care debate in 2010, the anchors at Fox News got a memo from the bosses telling them to start referring to the Democrats' plan as "government-run health insurance" rather than use the term "public option," which everyone else was using.

Why? Because CBS and NBC both ran polls showing that when you call it the "public" plan, up to 75 percent of the people are in favor -- after all, everybody likes public parks and public libraries, etc. It's a friendly word. But when polls inserted the word "government," support plummeted to 43 percent. The Exact. Same. Plan. You know, the same way that a lot more people bought canola oil after they changed the name from "rape seed oil."

This could pick up steam; the more liberal states may look at possibly implementing this in their states.

California will not because it is so broke.

Shumlin is pretty cool. When he was in the Vermont State Senate he led the fight for legalization of same-sex marriage, and was generally very progressive.

Also I'm from the part of Vermont where every single person I knew in high school complained that we elected Shumlin and it didn't reflect Vermont but all the hippies who come to our Universities and vote left and then we year-long Vermonters are stuck with the consequences.

    lol

Shumlin promised exactly this when he was running so I'm really impressed. So looking forward to his promised education reform next.
