Wii makes noise with Red Steel?

edited February 2007 in Games and Technology
I remember somebody mentioning this in the old Red Steel thread, but I couldn't find that thread using search...

Can someone reiterate what was discussed, or point me to that thread?

I seem to be having this issue...

I even went to ubi.com and checked the support pages, but there doesn't seem to be any info there...

Thanks!

I disagree. Red Steel is an alright game for 4-play splitscreen.

The Objective mode is actually really fun. I brought it to a New Years party over, get this, New Years, and actually had people asking to play it over Wii Sport, Excite Truck, and Rayman.

I've never noticed any additional noise from my Wii when I play red-steel, in regards to your OP.

:| No need to assassinate a thread. You ought to play through the whole game before passing judgement, it builds slowly and is really quite decent later on.

I've heard this is an issue too. I haven't heard of it hurting anything at all, it's just a noise. The game just has to load a lot so there's plenty of disk-spinning. BTW, my copy doesn't seem to make noise, although it could be something that others are more attuned to, depending on distance from the system etc.

Red Steel is decent. Not game of the year stuff, but a decent FPS. I think it depends on how well you take to the controls.

I don't think I have the "noise" problem. I don't remember hearing anything out of the ordinary when playing.

I was the guy who was having a problem.

IF: Your Wii is clicking horribly (i.e.: not a normal whirring or clicking in place) call Nintendo up and tell them that your Wii is having problems. Also check to see if other games are having problems with this beforehand (Mine did this with mainly just Ubi games). It's not that much of a hassle and won't cost you much.

TRY: Running the Wii on its side to see if it helps. it might be having problems in the vertical position.

IF NOT THESE: Return Red Steel for a new copy. If new copy is having bad problems, do the return.

Since this is a convenient Red Steel thread, can someone tell me how to get the game to accurately read my sword movements? About 2/3 of the moves are accurate to the direction I swing the sword, but about 1/3 of the time it misses. That's particularly true of vertical swings and simultaneous nunchuk/Wiimote moves. And no, I'm not barely missing either. I mean I move the Wiimote straight up and the sword goes to the left. I'd really like to start using some of the more advanced katas, but I can't get it to reliably read more than the three-move, strictly horizontal combos.

    It doesn't, from my play.

    Thanks for your replies.

Except for Mighty. You are entitled to your opinion, but responses like that are pretty weak.

I like this game a lot. Moreso as the game progresses. I have defended my posision on this at length on this very forum and I won't get in to this again.

To clarify the sound is more of a loading sound (i.e. the laser moving back and forth repeatedly...) and load times seem to be a bit slow. No other games have the issue. I REALLY don't want to have to send my Wii away...It does sound like a Ubi/Red steel issue...

I will try the horizontal posision and another Ubi game. I will call Ubi if I have to.

    Thanks again.

If it means anything, I have always run my Wii horizontally.

I find you can get pretty accurate sword response if you set the sword moves to "large" and you do big sweeping movements, rather than jerking the wiimote around.

Like for a right-left-right combo, I'll do like a figure 8 motion back and forth. Don't curve it too much though, otherwise it'll recognize a vertical slice.

vertical movements are hard to get accurate, but try the same strategy flipped 90 degrees.

So is the consensus that the Wii runs quieter horizontally? Madden has some loading noise for me, I was thinking about laying it flat.

I just played Red Steel. It's equally quiet as any other game -- Zelda, Rayman, COD3, etc. It makes no "noise," and the only sound coming from the system is the regular, completely normal disc spinning while loading data.

I run my Wii horizontally. I do this because I've feared running my consoles vertically since hearing about PS2 DREs. It makes more sense that running it horizontally will preserve the disc motor better over time. But maybe I'm just paranoid. I know that N makes sturdy hardware, so I trust them more than MS/Sony in this regard, but I'd still rather keep it horizontal.

All I can say is that if it's making noise, try running horizontal (turn off the system before laying it sideway). Try it.

Seriously? This is what you came INTO this thread to say?

The mods actually frown upon that type of post, if I am not mistaken. I went INTO the rules thread and read it there. Their POSITION on the matter is that threads should be kept on topic, and that they don't want people "quibbling" over every minor misspelling and grammatical error.

So who defends your useless posts?

    Back on topic...

So I played more Red Steel last night, and the noise didn't occur, thankfully...if it comes back, I'll start making phone calls.

I am on the damn Tetsuo's Games level...Ohhhhh man do I hate this level.

I got stuck at the part where you have to
[spoiler:d77af11031]turn the power back on so you can see. I found the area near the beginning of that section with the anime dolls blocking the path to a ladder...how the hell do I get around them???? I went down the rest of the hallways and killed all the black dudes with the white masks...but can't seem to find any other exits...[/spoiler:d77af11031]

Once my wii had a really loud fan but later that day it was quiet again when i played.

I guess it occasionally get off kilter or something.

    I didn't read the OP so I'm assuming it's a loud fan.

I read the thread title and thought it was referring to some strange new intentional feature that I hadn't heard about.
