    The amazon app market has given away the ad-free version of AB Rio twice, though.

    That's ridiculous, you don't have to root your phone to use the Amazon app store or play any version of Angry Birds (including Rio). Out of the box most phones (I'd say all but I'm not 100% sure) come with the "Only use Android Market Apps" box checked.

    You can find it under Settings/Applications
