Basic Cable

So me and my roommates have the basic triple comcast dealio (cable/internet/phone). I'm in college and have lived in various different places and just about everyone has this package, its what I have at home as well (or so I believe anyway)
We've had it at our new place for almost a year now, and its been more of the same.
Recently the cable tv stopped working. When the roomie on the bill called up they said our box "wasn't in the system" and it would be back up in a few days. Fast forward and another phone call and they said we shouldn't have the box at all. What? They sent us these boxes.
We'd typically unhook the box when we wanted to catch a football game in HD or something.
This gives us very little channels across random channel numbers.

I know basic cable plans have been cut back over the years (I remember when we lost a few channels at home) but this is ridiculous.
I'm certain I've never had so few channels, and hey it wouldn't be the first time Comcast lied to me.

I'm not even really sure what my question is specifically, but I'm sure someone is knowledgeable about Comcasts craziness.

Edit: My main confusion really is the box situation. It's not a big one, it's a tiny one. Which I actually figured was just one of those digital receiver things (which I understand we probably wouldn't need as our TV has one).
And I'm almost certain I've seen people just plug in the cable to their TV and get some free channels, though that I would imagine may be due to apartment situations.

Plugging a cable into your TV will probably give you channels 1-60, maybe a bit more maybe a bit less maybe with channels missing somewhere in between. Its kind of the expanded basic range. The box opens up interactive features like guides, dvrs, on demand, and higher channels. All companies charge for this box, some like to offer discounts on them.
No matter what, ALWAYS (and especially with Comcast they are quite good about it) call and ask if they have any promotions you can take advantage of. As soon as one is ending, call and ask for another. Comcast is really really good about this.

Either Comcast had a clerical error that got fixed, or someone called Comcast and changed the package and was supposed to return the boxes but didn't.

I'm confused. Is the box a digital over-the-air tuner or is it a cable box?
