Nintendo 3DS Thread: New Thread for 3DS Discussion
Does the fact that we now have region locked games combined with Nintendo seeming to be not be bothering to put up the 3D trailers on the European eStore, indicate a new dark age of gaming for the PAL territories?
I'm trying hard not feel pessimisitic here, but damn.

Are there other control schemes for Kid Icarus yet? (I hate using the touchscreen to aim)
I played the demo and while awkward the control scheme wasn't a deal breaker. It's like, it's not as smooth as we'd like, but functional, not downright crippling or even significantly hindering.
We got Disaster! We got Another Code: R! We got Tingle and Jam with the Band! We got that not-so-hot Hotel Dusk sequel! We're maybe getting some Wii RPGS that other places aren't getting, or at least at the same time.
NOE genuinely seemed to be making a bigger effort in recent years to treat Europe as a serious market, and to be fair things aren't nearly as grim for the 3DS as past consoles. Hell, we're still getting some stuff (like DOAD) a little earlier than the US, and simultaneous launches for the platform and the major games. The eshop is a little insulting as it stands though - they've increased prices by 30% over the equivalent in Nintendo/Wii Points, the front-end is a collection of utilitarian links rather than the promised themed categories, and all of the fancy trailers are missing.
Having said that, I stupidly bit the bullet and paid £11 for Shantae - and it's an excellent game, certainly better than many DS titles I've bought on impulse for a tenner. But the sprite work is astonishing, and it makes me feel a little sad inside that I have to either play it with the vaseline smear or in postage-stamp-o-vision. Speaking of which, why the hell aren't Gameboy games scaled to 2X? It's fun and squinty to play them in original res, but you could easily double each pixel, retain the sharpness and still fit it on the top screen. And why can't I switch them between top and bottom screen, when the DS was perfectly comfortable doing that witih GBA games?

I should clarify that I was thinking of Australia.
Now if you excuse me I have to listen to Trauma Team music and cry myself to sleep.

Yeah, we never got that either. I, however, choose to express myself via a black undercurrent of rage.
I thought that all PAL territories were considered the same for region-locking though? And given how stupid game prices are in Australia, and the weak pound and high discounts in UK online stores, I thought importing was almost becoming the norm.

Apparantly with the Australian dollar holding strong and game prices staying the same more people are complaining and importing, but yeah, then there's stuff like Trauma Team.
I played a bunch of 3DS games at E3 if you guys have any particular questions.
Forgive me if I ask too much...
First, what games did you play? I'd assume all the main ones that were shown, Mario, Kart, Luigi's Mansion, Star Fox. Was MGS playable at all?
Was there anything really surprising and awesome about any of the games, or did they simply feel like solid entries in their franchises? Were any really disappointing?
What was the 3DS game of the show?
How do hang gliders work in Mario Kart? Are you still sort of locked to the track, or can you take a hard left and fly off into the trees to look for secrets? If you land far off the track, I assume it'd just kill you and airlift you back on track?
That's pretty nice lookin', but I think I've moved on to the Rune Factory series instead. Same stuff you can do in HM only with lots more to do, slightly more interesting storylines and all wrapped in a nice fantasy aesthetic.
Looking fantastic! It's very reminiscent of Mario 3 with additional foreground/background depth at times, which isn't what people might expect from the Mario 64/Galaxy type of "3D" but we'll all love it anyway.

Since there was no response, I'll go ahead and answer.
- I played all of them except Luigi's Mansion - I'm just not interested in it.
- Starfox 64 multiplayer has been beefed up. More levels, more items, etc.
- Mario was slightly disappointing to me, since it was just another 3D Mario - no gimmicks, just solid platforming. I was reminded that I suck at Mario.
- Kid Icarus multiplayer was fun - it was basically a 3v3 deathmatch, and I wasn't really expecting that at all.
- Game of the show? Probably Starfox for me, followed closely by Kid Icarus. They're really similar, actually.
- Hang gliders are incredibly fun, if possibly broken. I think you're mostly locked to the track, but I never actually tried pulling hard turns. I've managed to accidentally veer off track and fly between the trees next to the track, and it didn't limit me there. Flying is much faster than driving, and in some tracks, you have an insane amount of range on them.
While I don't look forward to the inevitable bunnyhopping hang-gliding snake exploit, the image of a bunnyhopping hang-gliding snake is hilarious.

I just hope we get several new or different racers this time and make them a bit easier to unlock please.
I still haven't unlocked the majority of Mario Kart Wii due to the cheap AI. I want Dry Bowser so badly, but I am so not able to one star every track on 150cc.
Getting to the end just to get red shell, red shell, blue shell and then lose is frustrating beyond belief. :x

This, so very much. I don't mind - and in fact like - having unlockable racers / karts, but hate when they take a crazy amount of skill / luck / time to get. Especially with something like Mario Kart Wii, where the focus is ultimately the local multi-player for most people.

Maybe not....I just have always sucked hard at Mario Kart.
Just for kicks, I decided to check out one of the five star rated 1.99 DSi games. Advanced Circuits is pretty much a flash game, but it's fairly decent for what it is. I don't regret spending the little money that I did on it.

Speaking of the estore... You can now download a 3D Green Lantern trailer! You should be able to see it under Recent Arrivals -> New Software. Kinda odd that there isn't anything listed under Latest Videos.

Another good DSiWare game to check out is Glow Artisan, though if you have an iPhone/Pad/Pod/Plate, it's less expensive there. Same price on DSiWare as on the Windows Phone, apparently.
speaking of, can I move things to other slots like on the wii?
Yea, just take the stylus and hold it on one of the images, after half a second it'll 'disconnect' and then you just move it to a position you would rather have.

I played most of the games there, RE, Metal Gear, Mario Kart, Mario 3DS, Kid Icarus, no time for Luigi's Mansion or Starfox cause I had meetings to get to.
Resident Evil had flat out console level graphics, it looks alarmingly good on the actual system. Metal Gear was playable and looks better in motion than it did in the screenshots. One thing you might not like is that the right button pad is used for aiming like for shooters on the PSP, but it's by no means bad, just not as buttery smooth as we are used to with a second stick. Not much to say about Mario Kart, it's pretty and fun, and you can move around while gliding. I was going so fast while gliding that I actually hit the banner above the finish line both laps. I already posted about Kid Icarus. Mario 3DS feels like Mario 64 gameplay with SMB3 mechanics, and Galaxy graphics.

I think we've known since the first trailer that it is not a port, since none of what it shows takes place in another Paper Mario game.
They never said anything about it being a port.
If you watch the trailer, every area they show is new, as is the ability to use stickers as special attacks.
Examples in the trailer are the blowing fan and scissors.

If they put in the Hammer Brothers Suit and the Frog Suit then I will be smitten.

yeah I also forgot that I played it obsessively for quite a while after I got it
while I liked there being a payoff for that I can see why it would be frustrating for people.
