File Recovery

Does anyone know of a good file recovery software?

My external HDD "failed," but reading online I found that it was likely a problem with the circuitry on the enclosure itself. Sure enough when I removed it and place it in a standalone enclosure it worked fine and no longer made the horrible noise when accessing it. Unfortunately I had to reformat it.

So I need software that will recover the formatted files, so I can transfer them to my computer and to my other external HDD. Googling brings up a lot of hits, but I'm not really sure which one to go with and a lot of seem less than reputable.

I don't have any personal experience with this, but you could try Recuva from the same people as the well-known excellent utility CCleaner (and Defraggler, which I personally think is a great defrag tool). It's free, so it's not like you really have anything to lose, and it's from a good company, so it's definitely worth a shot.

Anyone with direct experience with this should definitely chime in with other solutions... but as I said, Recuva's free and from a reputable company, so I think it should be alright to give it a try.

I used products from these guys successfully once.

It was like 7 years ago though, so who knows how they are now.
