70's Cinema

Ok enough of this fucking around
Let's talk about one of the most awesome times in the history of movies

The 1970's- When shit got real

It started in the late sixties when you had all these kids trying to raise a different voice from the predominant culture
So you got movies like
easy-rider.jpg

You also had movies in Europe that tried new techniques in storytelling

So out of this came New Hollywood
francis-ford-coppola_gun_500.jpg
Francis Ford Coppola
Who was really great at making deals and making his way into the Hollywood system
So he brought his friends
luc0-035a.gif
and
Martin Scorsese
scorsese2.jpg
And they eventually became friends with some kid who snuck onto the studio
Jaws+-+Steven+Spielberg.jpg

Let's talk about all the great movies from this time
including the exploitation greats like
texas_chainsaw_massacre_1974_poster.jpg

Also we can help each other suggest movies based on the movies we like
For example, everyone likes
the_godfather.jpg
But have you seen Francis Ford Coppola's follow up?
conversation.jpg
Considered by Coppola and Gene Hackman as their best film
or the 1970 Italian film that greatly influenced the look of the Godfather and is a classic in its own right?
the-conformist-movie-poster-1970-1020518789.jpg
The Conformist an absolutely gorgeous film and even includes one of the actors from The Godfather II
the-conformist1.jpg
So let's explore!

    Does Cool Hand Luke count?

it was released in 1967, but I just bought it on bluray and it's one of my favourite flicks ever.

    Sure
    Why not
It fits in that late 60's time when Hollywood was trying to figure out movies to cater to countercultural audiences

Few movies off the top of my head that I like from the 70s.

    Rocky
    Alien
    Chinatown
    Barry Lyndon
    The French Connection
    Godfather I&II
    Young Frankenstein
    The Deer Hunter
    Dog Day Afternoon

Really though there is way too many movies to list. So much great shit that came out. I think everything on that short list is popular shit too.

Someone suggest some lesser known stuff I probably ain't never watched.

One of my favorite parts of Easy Riders, Raging Bulls was when they were talking about all the filmmakers living in those beach houses on the California coast doing drugs and having crazy parties, and Spielberg would come over and be the square.

Also when Lucas showed his friends the rough cut of Star Wars with WWII footage cut in. Everyone hated it except for Spielberg, who said it'd make millions.

Mo'fuckin' Chinatown was in 74. Network was 76. French Connection was 71. The Exorcist was 73. Apocalypse Now was 79 (Though I thought it was earlier, for some reason).

    Young Frankenstein

To this day, it blows my goddamn mind that Mel Brooks put out Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles in the same year.

Most people would be hard pressed to put out two comedy flicks that iconic in a lifetime. But in one year? Christ almighty, that's nuts.

It should be noted that Francis Ford Coppola is fucking nuts.
    IMDb wrote:
Martin Sheen had a heart attack during the filming and some shots of Willard's back are of doubles, including Sheen's brother Joe Estevez who was flown out specially. Coppola was so worried that backing would be withdrawn by the studio and distributor if news of Sheen's heart attack leaked out, that he kept it quiet, even to the extent of explaining Sheen's hospitalization as being due to "heat exhaustion" in the official Shoot Schedule.

My favorites from each decade, or the ones that were the most culturally significant? I think I'll take a stab at the latter.

    80s:
E.T., Ghostbusters, Aliens, Lethal Weapon, When Harry Met Sally

Each one huge, each one still being imitated.

    90s:
Terminator 2, Pulp Fiction, Toy Story, Titanic (which I'm not too keen on, but it was undeniably huge/popular/influential), The Matrix

    00s:
No Country for Old Men, Lord of the Rings, Brokeback Mountain, Juno (If only for starting a wave of twee movies that Hollywood's still surfing), Hurt Locker
