I'm going to be in Montreal for a few days in the next couple of weeks for a business trip. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for things to do when I'm not at my conference thing. The following restrictions (unfortunately) apply.
-Only able to go adventuring after 5-6pm
-Going to be solo
Place Jacques Cartier has some nice restaurants; I had a really good time at Jardin Nelson. It has a huge open section that has a stage for a jazz combo and you can get Maudite there, which will absolutely knock your socks off.
Also, not sure if you're into this kinda thing, but the strip clubs are pretty awesome.
It's awesome that smoked meat sandwiches would be mentioned, as the last time I was in Montreal my coworker insisted we do that, and oh man was he ever correct. Definitely plan on partaking of that at least once.
Beyond that, in terms of what I'd LIKE to do, I...don't really have a specific aim in this case. I'm currently living in a very small city, so frankly practically anything interesting in Montreal would be a tremendous opportunity for fun, especially in relative terms.
The strip club stuff, eh, I dunno. Not the first place I've heard that recommended, but I'm not sure that's really my kind of thing.

I've never been to Montreal, but lived in Canada for 2 1/2 to 3-ish years. Anytime people mentioned Montreal in a sentence they always brought up "strip club" or "titty bar"
So if you're into that, do that. And if you're not, do that.
As for smoked meat sandwiches, the best, in my humble opinion (and according to the majority of afficionados) is Schwartz's
If you can't get in (the place usually has a lineup outside of people waiting to get a table... being alone, you might be able to get in sooner, though) I've personally found that Dunn's is almost as good.
I have to say that, even though I live here, I don't have many more suggestions -- I mean I could recommend other restaurants I like, but apart from what's been mentioned, anything more would depend on what your tastes are...
Also, if you could tell us the dates when you'll be there, some of us could find some specific events you might be interested in.
Lastly, if you gave us some hints as to your musical tastes, more suggestions might be forthcoming.

Meh the strip clubs are over rated. I think half the fun comes from being allowed to go at 18 instead of 19, for most canadians anyway. But really the strip clubs are the same as anywhere else, except everythings in french.
If you like blues/jazz, check out La Salla Rosa. Its a hipstery kind of blues/jazz bar, not even strictly old stuff, they have some pretty awesome bands there all the time. The only other bar ive ever been to thats analogous would be the Silver Dollar here in toronto, nice mix of young hipsters, hot girls, and old drunk dudes. Drinks are cheap too, and theres a restaurant downstairs if you want to eat.
The only other advice is watch out for beggars. Downtown Montreal is littered with "homeless" kids and theyre freaking relentless. And skip out on the afterhours clubs unless youre into hanging out with 15 year olds. And dont worry about a language barrier, in Montreal everyone speaks english, and if they say they dont they just dont wanna talk to you, so move on.
And if youre there and the Canadiens lose, watch out for riots. Hell, if they win, watch out for riots. Montreal loves rioting. I got stuck in the middle of one when the sex pistols cancelled a show back in like... 2003? Its not super dangerous but man, its weird to see people flipping cars and lighting shit on fire when it just kind of starts happening out of nowhere.

Do not ask questions. Just find one and consume it.
On a Montreal bagel. From St. Viateur
Also the ballet.
Mont Royal has some amazing views at night.

What about Unibroue? Their restaurant was very nice as well.

Also, poutine is delicious, and it's a Montreal specialty.
I second this advice. This city gets excited about its sport in a way you rarely see in other fan bases.
If you're interested, Montréal has boatloads of museums. http://www.museesmontreal.org/
It's really worth it to visit a few of these places. I go visit a new one whenever I'm in Montréal.
