Definitely AP. Don't forget the serious risk of injury from TC when you attempt to do the Terran plot and decide instead to stab yourself in each ear with a fork.
I would put the case that Reunion is actually better than TC. AP is the best of the lot though, and with no real price difference you should just play that.
Hooraayy I managed to get a refund of Rebirth. I gave up after my initial back and forth last month, but a friend encouraged me to try again and I got it on the first shot. Sorry Egosoft, I love you but you can't make something that terrible ever again. Back to X3!
I just upgraded to a monster PC and I still can't get above 30fps at minimum settings... I mean seriously whoever coded Rebirth needs to be hung from the nearest tree.
Oc'd 4670k to 4 ghz, 256gb evo pro, 8gig 2100hz ram, sli gtx660 oc... I mean really egosoft you guys really screwed the pooch on this one...

I've never even heard of "We didn't design this for high end PCs" before this. It's almost like it's a DX9 game made for the xbox 360 or something.
They have made a statement about attempting to make it work on the 360 (and left in a lot of references ). It was also designed to work well with a 360 controller which really crippled the UI. It also feels like it suffers from the dumbing down that happens when games are designed with console releases in mind.
All that really doesn't matter .. Whatever the reasons, the game should not have been released in the state that it was.
Well, Rebirth helped me decide to buy X3:AP during the thanksgiving sale. I hit 216 hours played last night, AND I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU SAY.
I'm not saying it was developed for the 360 and just ported back to the PC for funsies, but there is no damn reason in the world you make a PC exclusive game DX9 only in 2013. They were clearly trying to grab the console market with this thing (add in radial menus and "joystick support" meaning "360 pad"), and failed horribly. Regardless, they managed to make a game too terrible for any console or PC.
Really, developing in DX9 and using radial menus is a radical departure from the previous (largely successful) script and suggests that at a minimum, they had design goals more compatible with the console market than with the PC market.

Ok it's been a while since I've played a X game...I just picked up X3AP...any good guides out there for starting out?
What kind of start are you trying? Or what character are you using? Different ones get different starting ships etc., the humble merchant is probably one of the easiest starts, but a bit boring if you don't enjoy trading things with stations. Definitely have a map up of the galaxy in your steam overlay or on a second monitor so you know if you can take a mission or not based on the time. Personally I love this site for information http://roguey.co.uk/x3ap/sectors/
This will seem dumb, but I can't seem to find the full throttle control. I could have sworn there was something similar to the full stop button (backspace), but instead was full throttle. I'm not a fan of scrolling the mouse wheel furiously.
I'm just doing some random missions, capturing ships for now. Will probably try and fully upgrade my buster.
Not sure where to start for the main mission, I seemed to have missed that instruction.

Tab will do it. It might need the boost extension.

Tab will give full speed regardless, the boost only gets you up to max faster.
Space Engine videos with appropriate music. Enjoy.
Started building up some rep and credits...managed to get something better than those stupid Impulse Ray Emitters that they give you at first...and sold my 1MJ shield for a 5MJ (that's all I could afford). Did an escort mission that would net me ~55,000 credits PLUS I capped a couple pirate ships...was feeling pretty good...until a local sector patrol tried to jump in and help me with the final pirate. I got caught in the crossfire of his flamethrower, knocking me down to 20% hull. Used all my credits to repair and only got up to 47%.

If you are in a M6 or smaller, never pay to repair. just park somewhere safe, eject, and pepper your hull with your suits built in repair laser.
I usually just wedge something into the mouse button so it fires while I'm off getting food or going to the bathroom.
Never, ever ever ever ever pay to repair the hulls of anything M6 or smaller.
Wasn't there a giant pdf beginner's guide in previous iterations of X3? Is there anything similar to this for AP?
The X3:TC one works pretty well for this; there are some major differences between the two - like the whole "War Sectors" thing - and the changes in the story missions, but otherwise the state of the universe isn't that different.
You can add me on Steam (link below) and ask me questions, too!
So I've spent a week trying to get a new game of X3 AP started with the X Rebalance Mod but every time I started a new game it always froze and was not responding in the task manager. Cue me uninstalling and reinstalling the game at least 3 times (this involves downloading from steam each time...) trying to find the conflict with the list of installed mods I have.
Turns out I wasn't letting it load long enough at the start of a game and the installation was fine the entire time, I just had to let it sit there unresponsive for 3 minutes.

Interesting. Never really sat and got super deep into 3, but it was enjoyable as long as you didn't accidentally run into something and die and whoops your last save was ages ago. Then Rebirth was, well, Rebirth. Hopefully this first look shows some nice things.
Side note, did Rebirth ever reach a halfway decent state? I seem to recall that at launch it was a mess.
It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

Perfect, it was just taking longer than usual to run all the scripts when it first starts.
X4 is being worked on and Egosoft are going to present a first look at it during the upcoming XCon. There will also be a presentation of X Rebirth VR.
