Definitely get foobar. I've been using it for years now and could never go back to winamp. Tabbed playlists are just too beautiful of a thing.
I used to mess with foobar skins a lot but over the past year or so I just stopped caring. I usually use the default look, but right now I am using Columns UI with default settings. Plain Jane for me. It matches my all white desktop theme quite well though.
So... been using Foobar for a bit, and apparently iTunes has been lying to me. Tags that I thought I had changed (and which show up right in iTunes) aren't updated in Foobar. Anyone know why? And any recommendations for a more reliable tagging program than iTunes?
Also, how can I get artwork embedded in the file to show up as Folder.jpg?
I use Winamp when I'm on Windows too. It really doesn't eat to many resources for me. It's Media Library is great. Integrates with my iPod.
I've always wanted to switch to foobar, but just couldn't get in to customizing it to not look and work like ass. Weird thing is, I have no problem doing that customization with something like Miranda, but foobar.... no. I think its the fact that you have to edit text files that pisses me off.

I use winamp, it's the program I"m most used to, and it does all the things I want - one of the things I like about it is the global hotkeys - so if I have music in the background while i'm playing guild wars or something, I just hit a couple keys and it goes to the next song without switching windows.
Note: I have no idea if any other players do this, but I know winamp does.
I use winamp too, since it just plain WORKS for me. Sure, I could switch to foobar, but the time that I'd spend getting it to how I like it wouldn't be worth it when I already have Winamp exactly how I like it coming right out of the box.
So I decided to nuke my foobar settings and do something of my own instead.
And once again I find myself literally laughing out loud at the horrible shittiness of some parts of foobar. :P
Foobar can look so terribly awesome. But the scripting language actively works against you; using someone else's theme requires an hour of cut and pasting and hope you get the right code snippet into the correct text box.

I use MediaMonkey. It's free and you can embed album art into files with a handy auto-search Amazon tool. However sadly I have not found a way to make embedded album art show in foobar. If you find a way, please PM me and tell me how you did it. My folder structure has various artists in the same folder and directory-based tagging just does not work.

But... but how? I downloaded the theme from the link you posted but I can't seem to figure out how to apply the theme to foobar.
I'm probably not doing it right, but do you have any pointers?

I do now. Where do I put the FofR .pui file?
And should I load PanelsUI or ColumnsUI?

Load PanelsUI and put the .pui file in the "panelsUI" folder.
There we go. Thanks man.

You're welcome. There are a couple things you can tweak if you right click and go to settings anywhere on the playlist screen. I think you have to change the directory for the images in order for the backgrounds and buttons to show up.
You can also change fonts and set the theme to either black or white.

Okay, so I'm retarded. How do I change the directory for the images and how do I import my music directory into the playlist all at once as opposed to moving the music files over album-by-album?
EDIT: It doesn't help that I have NO experience with foobar...

I'd love to use Foobar, but the ridiculous levels of retardness on the customizing front is really inexcusable. I mean, it should be easy to install a freaking SKIN after someone already made it...
Instead, you're supposed to go through a ridiculously complicated gauntlet of installing all kinds of different arcane shit, messing with incomprehensible config files...
people, this is year two thousand and motherficking seven, we are not messing around with Altair 880's anymore.
Can't someone make a "cool skin update pack" to make it look like those pretty black versions?
Echo, thanks for that link. It helped tons. I managed to define the image path through settings and such. There are two things I am having problems with:
1. When I use the browse tab and navigate to a folder with any music foobar crashes. What exactly is the browse tab supposed to be used for?
2. So album art... where should I put it, what should I name it, and what resolution/size should each picture be?

I'm pretty new to this, so don't take this as fact, but I read (I think it was in the Neowin foobar topic) that people aren't supposed to do that. However, I'm not sure if that is a foobar rule or a Neowin rule.
I know it is bad form to bump but I am totally stumped on this. I have downloaded a couple pieces of album art and named them "Artist - Album.jpg" and placed them in basically every directory I could possibly think of. When any jpg is placed in the directory where my music resides it becomes the album art... for every song. Even if there are other jpgs in the directory with the music the one that is first alphabetically becomes the album art for every song on the playlist. This was the only way I could get any art to display at all, however. Am I even on the right track?

Yep, it's pretty damn silly that there's still no simple way to package up a theme for distribution.

Unfortunately, Foobar can't read embedded album art, as far as I can tell. It needs a jpg file in the mp3 file's folder. You can always get your tagging software to save all embedded art as Folder.jpg, so it's not so bad, but if you have multiple albums in one directory, that's not going to work so well.
I love its low memory footprint (not that I'm skint on RAM, but I just love the efficiency). I wish I could get my head about the customization and make a slim skin for it. Also, volume bar. Why the fuck does the default Foobar not have a goddamn volume bar, god (I am aware of the hotkeys, but c'mon). ColumnsUI does a good job of providing one, thankfully :P
Hey Echo, I'm using the same theme as you but I don't have those three buttons across the bottom (The arrow, the A/Z and the cog) are they a seperate plugin, or did I screw up somewhere?
You need to change the directory for the images. Right click anywhere across the bottom (where the buttons should be) then click settings. You should see a bunch of code. There will be some code that looks like
// Directory that contains the style images (make sure there is no trailing slash)
$setpvar(dir,C:\Program Files\foobar2000\images)
Just make the path where ever you put the images that came with the skin. Restart and you're done.
edit - the formating for this post is all screwy..oh well
2. So album art... where should I put it, what should I name it, and what resolution/size should each picture be?
The higher resolution the better. Name it cover.jpg and stick it in the same folder as the songs for that album.
Thanks. The reason I was having so much trouble is I keep my music in folders by genre, not album. Works like a charm now, though.
I'm still confused about the browse panel, however. What exactly is the purpose? And does anyone have an idea why foobar crashes whenever I navigate to a panel directory with music inside?
I upgrade WM from 9 to 11 last night. And I'm in love!<3
For me, I can't figure out what the heck I am doing when I try to use WMP11... And because everyone's recommending it, I'll go and try out Foobar. Seems nice so far, but I'm still unsure if it is worth the effort to skin it...

I've been using iTunes for so long that I decided to give WMP 11 a shot just to see what I've been missing. And I have to ask, is Microsoft being serious with this library navigation interface? I'm supposed to click on, say, genre, select a genre, and then.... scroll through an enormous list of doom to find the album, artist, or song I'm looking for? This is a joke, right? I keep thinking I must be missing an option somewhere to improve the navigation.
It's like they took iTunes browser feature, where a set of progressive choices narrows down the list to whatever you're looking for, and stopped half way through so that you've always got a butt load of scrolling to do. It might work OK for small libraries, but it's hell for large ones.
The lack of any podcast support is really lame, too.

Agree wholeheartedly.
I was actually laughing out loud at the crappy syntax of the script language foobar uses when I was making my own setup once. :P

With 5000 songs in the library, Winamp is using about 15mb of memory.
I'm using Minima as a skin and Toaster, which is a little box that pops up with album art and song info whenever Winamp changes songs.
It looks mighty snazzy in my opininion.

I think I saw a Toaster version for foobar somewhere, but I see that on my G15 display anyway.

CUZ THERE'S SOMETHING IN THE MIDDLE AND IT'S GIVING ME A RASH
Its name alone kicks ass.
Do you mean, like, sync with the iPod? I'm pretty sure there's a sync plug-in, but I don't own an iPod so I haven't tried it out.
I don't use synching, I manage the library manually. But yes, I need to know if it can add or remove songs from the iPod.
