Like Feral said it's just his willingness to voice normative judgements over social stuff that makes him seem like he should be writing for the National Review

He does tend to have the same poor understanding of history that I would expect from a National Review writer.

    no u

Seriously, when you talk about history you tend to have Daxon levels of wrong. Except about facts rather then opinions.

we've been around this many times, and my perception of events is that you have a habit of exaggerating my views or opinions until you can impute me with a view that you can express outrage at.

I don't need to exaggerate to do so. If I simply want to be outraged, I can find an ample number of things to point my anger at. I have plenty of it and the world has an ample supply of injustice. If I'm angry, it's not because I'm looking for a reason but because you have said something I feel worthy of being angry about.

As to your positions I find you take positions as you think things should be based on a view of history that didn't happen. Your stance on pride parades, for instance, is based on the idea that the Civil Rights movement was non-confrontational. Except that MLK made it very clear that his goal was confrontation. It's not even interpretation, the The Letters From a Birmingham Jail are pretty explicit on the subject.
my view is that king was not needlessly confrontational. of course he was confrontational - his marches drove a lot of southern whites batty. the basic thesis of passive resistance and civil disobedience is confrontation.

but kings marches were also peaceful, purposeful and inclusive in a way that some of the high-profile "gay pride" parades that i differ with have not been.

there is plenty of valid ground between "if MLK were alive today he would be a republican" and "if MLK were alive today he would be riding a dick float"

King's entire plan was based around confrontation. He had no interest in being violent but he knew he was going to provoke a violent reaction. And the dick float does serve a purpose. The pictures we see of King's marches are of peaceful, even pleasant people. But to the people of the South, the sight of that black skin marching was even more inflammatory then the dick float ever could be. The very sight of King and his followers marching caused anger. Take away the dick float and you take away the confrontation. A bunch of people marching in Houston doesn't get Joe Homophobe in Vider upset. But that dick float is going to piss his ass off in the same way that seeing King marching on TV pissed off his grandfather Joe Racist. And at the end of the day, that anger is a requirement. For there to be dialogue, there needs to be confrontation first. There were plenty of African-Americans pushing for civil rights before King. They were peaceful and non-confrontational. And they didn't accomplish squat.

And I'm not sure how a gay pride parade could be more inclusive. There is a section for everyone. Straight Ally? There is a section, here is your flag. PFLAG member? Here is your section and your flag.
king's marches were not centrally about shock, titillation or self-expression - which are the central elements in some gay pride parades that i have disagreed with. king's marches also served a purposes than infuriating southern racists, which was demonstrating the reasonability and rightness of his position (and the wrongness of the response of some southern racists) to a broader audience that included northern whites.

i have attended gay pride parades in boston and they were pretty understated affairs, with throngs of old gay couples with signs talking about how long they have been together, etc. there is not for the most part the kind of pageantry or lasciviousness or intent to shock that i've seen in similar parades in DC or New Mexico or (on the TV) in San Francisco.

And the parades in Massachusetts seem to be effective!

i probably wouldn't agree with Joe Homophobe in Vider about too many things, but I'll bet we'd have a similar reaction to seeing a dick float roll down the street we live on. putting sympathetic people and potential allies into an out-group through a desire to shock is an astoundingly bad approach to winning allies and making progress.

His protests were exactly about shock. He wrote about knowing what the effect of seeing all of those black faces marching would do. He was well aware that of the visual impact. He also knew what the impact would for the people watching on TV. He wrote a lot about his decision to include children, knowing the emotional impact of seeing that. These are not inferred things. He wrote in his diaries about it. Everyone from other members of the civil rights movements to the White House warned him what would happen. To proclaim that his marches weren't about shock is to pretend that non-confrontation means non-violence. Shocking people was exactly what he wanted. And it worked.

is what you are saying is that MLK would certainly have advocated for dick floats if only he had thought of them and that any other understanding of the man, his methods or his intentions betray a gross ignorance of history?

is this where you are going?

because the effect of peaceful, purposeful marches of black people through southern streets shocked racists but did not shock sympathetic whites, who saw a peaceful demonstration as eminently reasonable and the disproportionate counteractions as unreasonable. the dichotomy between the two positions ended up being a big part of the civil rights movement.

this paradigm doesn't, in my view, really work the same way with dick floats.

Seriously, instead of draining someone's mana so they can't cast spells, why not just fucking murder them? Then, they can't cast spells, and they're fucking dead.

because i don't need to spend all my points and money on expensive spells and advanced bombs

when i take a turn, enemies don't get to move. I have disorient, paralyze, and mass paralyze. Do my fights take longer? possibly, but they're easier as my allies rip enemies to shred with little to no threat, and it costs me almost nothing in potions or bombs

i fight lean, instead of hwarfing myself over every two hurlocks
What else, exactly, are you going to spend your money on?

Also, once you've upgraded your bomb shack (which is actually really fucking cheap), shock bombs and fire bombs cost you just as much as shard bombs. Only since they do way more damage, you're spending the same amount for substantially more effect. Really, you're the one who's wasting money in the long-term.

i am at a point in the game where money is extremely sparse and the need to be frugal is very high

I think Romney is probably going to end up with it. The Republicans in recent years are pretty consistent about the most mild, uninteresting candidate getting the nod (McCain, George W., Dole, Bush). And while I think Obama will fare well against him, I'd rather see him up against somebody like Trump, who he can afford to be a little more liberal against, and who will hurt the Congress "people" riding on his coattails.

The Daily Show did a pretty bang up job showing how bad early primaries polls are as predictors. Trump will be lucky to make it past the first state primary, that is if he's actually dumb enough to try a run. And yes....he's probably arrogant, dumb enough, and has enough yes man around to tell him it's a good idea. Especially after this BC debacle today.
