Guardian Heroes HD coming to XBLA, "enhanced" graphics optional, gameplay vid
Game is coming this fall. "Enhanced" widescreen graphics and art. Online co-op and battle modes, new modes, and more. All your dicks, etc. etc.
Sega PR nabbed from GAF:
SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd. today announced the upcoming re-release of Guardian Heroes™, a classic Action-RPG Brawler by celebrated developers Treasure. Originally released for the SEGA Saturn™ in 1996, Guardian Heroes has been re-mastered with enhanced graphics, online co-op and battle modes, all-new modes of play, and more. The game will be available via Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft this fall.
“Ever since we began to make SEGA’s classic Dreamcast and the Mega Drive titles available for modern systems, the fan response has been overwhelming – and the demand for their favorite games has been pouring in,” said Haruki Satomi, VP of Digital Business at SEGA. “Players have been clamoring for this treasured favorite from the Saturn days, and we cannot wait to show them what we have got for them.”
Guardian Heroes brings the Saturn favorite to life with new HD graphics, presenting Treasure’s iconic fast-paced gameplay on a new generation of hardware, with all of the convenience of purchase via instant download. The game also features:
Action-RPG Brawling: Choose one of five heroes to level up and guide along a branching storyline with five different endings
Friends, Foes, and Fighters: Play the game’s Story Mode alone or with a second player, or challenge Versus Mode with up to 12 players at once
Extended Gameplay: Time Attack Mode, Arcade Mode, Arrange Mode and more allow players to explore every nuance of 45 different fighters
Fully Re-Mastered: All-new graphics and visual effects bring the classic to life in a completely high-definition, widescreen presentation

I personally don't get the "pixelated" obsession some people have, pixels were there because of sprite limitations in the past. I don't like pixels in my games like I don't like a crank-handle on a car. Sure it was fine in the good ol' days, but clean images are more to my liking ( ie Castle Crashers)

These are far from clean images. These are just downright nasty.

But those images aren't clean. Ironically the pixel images would be cleaner. Those look like chalk drawings dipped in water.
Yeah, that looks like shit. The animation maybe is lots better? I hope.
I highly doubt it. It looks like they just ran the sprites through a filter. Animation requires a lot more work/time, so I doubt they would go that route.
Yeah, part of the charm of the original was how pixelated things could get.
Wha..? No. That was not charming in any way. Neither was the insane amounts of slowdown when you used any spell any time with anyone on screen. Ever.
I love this game... it is my favorite game of all time (of all time), but it was not without flaw.
And regardless of the graphics, this still could play well. The animations may be good. I'll wait to see it in motion before making up my mind but, really, if it's the same gameplay but with online play as well? Sold.
What's worse is that they've thickened the black pixel outlines, so now it just looks like incredibly sloppy linework from an amateur artist.
It's going to have the same animations as well. For them to make it animate any better, they would have to redraw, which is clear that's not the case in those screenshots.

It looks like Sega took a Super NES emulator, plugged Guardian Heroes into it, and turned on every sprite filter just 'cause.
Christ, all they had to do was go in and tweak it to have widescreen and not slow down to a crawl with spells flying or a lot of things on the screen and it'd be fantastic.

There will probably be an option to turn the filter off. Most games that "make them HD" by adding a crappy filter allow it to be turned off. I think Sega's Genesis games do that, but I'd have to be home to make sure.
Also, this is the first time I've seen enthusiasm for a game deflate within the first few posts.
Well, there are those that love Guardian Heroes because it was fun as hell and I guess there are those that loved it because it was a pixelated mess.
I doubt this is as direct port, considering it's Saturn roots.
And I'm sure as long as the gameplay is relatively untouched the XBLA port will be fun as hell too.
It'll just look like shit.
Maybe if they put some Back into it, maybe Bone up on what fans expect from this sort of game.
Backbone has messed up in some minor or major way every single port they've done this gen, from the most simple of early 80's arcades to other Treasure classics.
I think it looks more like they're going for a more, I dunno, "stylistic" look or filter; that said, it is kind of early to write this off as a failure just because of a few preliminary screenshots. Who knows, maybe they'll listen to criticism and fix things.
I for one can't wait to wreck things with Nicole and her awesomely deadly smiley army.

Randy was the best, with his lightning move.
Can't wait.
EDIT: Looks pretty, um, not okay... Hype diminished within the span of 5 minutes.

This whole thread should just be locked.

I'd rather look at dead Osama photos.

And, for the record, I loves me some pixels.

Actually it seems the title might have to be taken literally now :?

My girlfriend will be pissed when she finds this out, since she's always been a huge GH fanatic.

Agreed. The problem is that "style" looks like poop from a butt.
