I just called the Customer Service for XBOX, and I told them my 360 died with the three red lights and they asked me when I purchased it. "But on Launch Day of course!" I replied with a big, heartly laugh.
Long story short, the guy tells me: "You're off the garanty. Pay 170$CAN to exchange it or Fuck off." I tell him that you normally have to pay shipping to exchange the product when it's defective due to the manifacturer's componants and the warranty's over. Paying shipping PLUS 120$ because MS fucked my system is a fuckin' joke. I argued for a while with him and his supervisor and he said they'd pay the shipping but I still had to pay the 120$ so a fuckin' asshole can take out my dead 360 out of a box and put in a new one.
Is there any alternative since I saved for a while to pre-paid CRACKDOWN and I have to pay 120$ for a new 360? Which fuckin' sucks since I'm a College student with no money.
We’re getting some questions about the new policy we put in place earlier this week in the US and Canada, for those needing repairs for consoles sold last year.
Even though the vast majority of Xbox 360 owners are having an outstanding experience with their Xbox 360, we noticed a higher than usual number of consoles coming in for repair. Upon further investigation, we discovered that the bulk of the units were isolated to a group that was part of the initial manufacturing run of the console.
While there is no single problem here – returns for repair are coming in for a variety reasons – it’s a higher rate than we are satisfied with. So, we’ll be covering the out-of-warranty repair costs for consoles purchased in the US and Canada before January 1, 2006. We're also providing a refund to the small group of customers who have already paid for repairs.
Most of those that purchased a console during this time period are having no problems, so you shouldn’t be concerned if you have one of these consoles, and you haven't had any issues with it.
As usual, if you have any problems, call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX.
Call them back and inform the rep you talked to that he's a fucking asswipe.
What happens if you got the extended 1 year warranty? cause i got that, and then Microsoft extended the regular warranty to one year, does that mean my box has a 2 year warranty or I just paid 50 bucks for some warranty that doesn't make sense? sorry to be a bit off topic I'm just curious
Yeah, because spending $700 Canadian to buy a PS3 is obviously so much better than spending $120 to fix an XBox 360 that he already owns and has games for.

thread was over with FaceballMcDougal's post. I was just annoying Katchem_Ash, and apparently other people. For that, I apologize to everyone but Katchem_Ash.

Okay, so this is anecdotal and should be taken with a grain of salt, but at least it's a little hope for you.
I bought my 360 on launch day - got the thing at a midnight release and everything. I worked great (and I mean, not a single problem) up until the beginning of January. January 9th, the thing takes a dive, and dies a horrible death for no reason. I just tried to start it one day and got the three rings. Apparently, this is all-too-common for launch units.
When I called the same support line the OP did, they didn't even blink. They offered to repair it for free, AND pay shipping. Even though I was outside of the original 90 day warranty and the extended 1 year time period.
Give them another call and make a row. If they won't listen to you, ask for a supervisor. These launch consoles are prone to breaking, and Microsoft knows that... Just be careful. The replacement they sent me took over a month to get to me, and after all that trouble, they sent me a refurbished launch console that sounds like a jet engine. It works great, but I snapped up the extended warranty as fast as I could.
It really cheeses me off though that these folks aren't trained in something that is so critical to MS's warranty replacement policy. I mean it should be a goddamn neon sign up in whatever cramped office in India these fools work out of.

Anyway, more on topic, Microsoft support is a huge crapshoot. Sometimes they're incredibly helpful, sometimes they don't even speak English. Just try calling back and insisting you can get it replaced for free because it's a launch system.

Gee, thanks man! They're gonna fuckin' pay!
Plus, I'll send a complaint saying the guys on the phone don't know squat.

I just called and the guy told me to fuck off saying it's the original 30 days PLUS a whole year. Meaning that when I purchased it in November 2005, my warrante ended in January 2007. He said I didn't know what I was talking about.

Don't even talk to the first person you get. Ask for a manager right away

Shit. Goddam, that sucks.
Thanks.
Or did that expire already?
also, its GUARANTEE
It was an extension of their 90 day warranty to 1 year.
It was just a year, and the 360 came out over a year ago.
Well, in that case, yeah. Yer fucked.
You honestly scare me.

Or he could get a new 360 and Wii and have 2 systems with good games on them.
There fixed it better for you.

Ignore the console dick-waving and listen to Faceball's post. I don't have a 360 but I remember that news floating around.

Ninja edit: I got my xbox360 used on ebay and it was still under warrenty when it broke, sweet deal.
You have something like 30 days to buy it after you purchase the console
Related questoin -- can I transfer the MS extended warranty to someone else if I sell the 360?
So what you're telling me is that my Xbox is going to die one day after I buy it and I'd have wasted $350?
But what do I say? "Hey, you know you told me my warranty was over, well there's this guy on a blog that said it isn't!"

No, only $120, since apparently that's how much it costs to get it repaired out of warranty.
I'd be pissed too
