Ok so my original 60gig PS3 is giving me the blinking light of death. This thing is way out of warranty. I know I have to contact Sony to get it repaired. Can anyone give me advice on doing this and telling me what to expect?

P.S. I did try to use the forum search function but it wasn't working for me.

It's going to cost $150. That's the flat rate for repairs. Also if they can't fix that one and have to send you a new one you're going to have to format the hard drive. The PS3 does not like any HDD that isn't assigned to that specific unit. Can you at least turn the system on to back up saves to a flash drive? Because if you can then do that to be safe. Anything you can't transfer though is gone. There's no way around it. You're also going to lose any DLC or downloaded games, but you can redownload them when PSN is back up. Finally, did you ever buy movies or anything like that on the PS3? Because those are going to be gone if you need to format the drive. You can't redownload them for free, you're going to have to pay again.

This is a BC model right? I'm going to say that most likely they'll have to fix that, because I don't think they'll have any other 60 gig models laying around. So you probably don't have to worry about losing anything. Back up just to be safe though if you can.

Also is this an overheating problem with the yellow lights or whatever? If it is you can try putting a vacuum up to the vents on the right side, not a strong one of course but medium strength, and clean out the vents. It's possible that something is preventing the fans from moving and your system is shutting itself down to save itself. It's worth a shot, you're already out of warranty and the manual does recommend cleaning it like that. Oh, you can also look up videos on youtube and such of YLOD fixes if you got the yellow lights. Don't do anything with the fan test though. It's dangerous and hurts the system, so if you somehow got it working with a fix but you did that test first you just hurt it a bit.

I've heard good things about GopherMods from a friend. Anyone else have experience with them?

I've found a few sites claiming to do PS3 repair cheaper than Sony. I'd rather go with Sony and get some type of warranty on the work.

I have the red blinking light, my PS3 will either lock up or shut down. My brother and I managed to sync our trophies to PSN before the network went down. But we haven't been able to back out saved games & data.

We're not sure what happened but we do use the PS3 for everything. It's the center of our entertainment system. I vacuum it out often on all of the vents with a very strong vac.

It's probably just wear and tear then. I doubt anything you did in particular caused it to die, because I use my system for blu-rays and DVDs as well and its only problem is the fan will kick in to the second level after about a half hour during the day because the room is kind of hot. It could be any number of things that caused yours to die. One day it got way too hot, a part came loose due to vibrations, moisture in the air damaged it, it could be anything. I would call Sony though and explain what kind of model it is. They have to give you back the same model, so if they're going to fix it they can probably tell you if you'll lose your saves.
