Malphite is amazing. I just went 8-2-15... we were even on kills too between teams. Ult into 3+ during teamfight, brutal strikes, ground slam, slow someone who's running and ignite another. Sooooo easy.
What items do you get? I start Doran Ring, then boots and giant's belt into Sunfire Cape.
So I've been playing this game for a couple of months and by and large really enjoying it. Or at least I've been enjoying the gameplay. However, as I've gone up levels my team mates have become more and more insufferable, often regardless of whether we're winning or losing. It's of of disheartening.
I've considered trying to get in on some Penny Arcade games, but I didn't want to drag teams down with my conspicuous lack of skill.
On a related note, how to I become less bad?
Dude don't worry about it for real. Just hop in vent. I remember when I first started playing and was nervous cause I was (still am) bad. Nobody will get mad or yell.
...Unless it's Varega or Simon and you go 1/9/0 with Nunu during an inhouse. Or if you're playing on a touchpad. You'll never hear the end of it.

So I'm trying to figure out why my game is stuttering during play. It only happens occasionally, but the game will 'pause' and all of the animations will continue, and I'll see lifebars ticking down, but no movement or chat. I can execute commands/use skills during this time, but I won't know if they're effective until the game catches up. It runs through everything I missed all at once. I figured it was something to do with my ISP, lost packets or something. Still haven't figured it out. Makes the game almost unplayable.

As a corollary, you'll either do way worse or way better than you deserve whenever you play with PA people.
Nobody ever does their average. It's always "oh god I swear I'm not like this in a normal match" or "haha, my 3rd pentakill of the night!"
Still, don't let it discourage you. Just hop on and play with PA dudes. It's makes the game 10x as fun.
I think my last PA game I went laning Udyr. "Don't worry guys I've done this before" and promptly went 1/9/5. I have done it to great success before though, but I think it requires a solo lane or clueless enemy team.
I forgot to mention something when I rambled at length about Taric/Soraka. While I do quite like building pure AP as it is so sexy I found that it often failed me against a team with a good assassin or lots of ignites. Examples include the Evelynn that kicked my shit in every teamfight. If that happens I build an Aegis before any AP for that sexy survivability. I ended up surviving a Malz ult combo, typing "oo scared" and healing myself up to full while my team hunted him down.

I'm probably very mid range, so I couldn't say, but bushes are a great way to gank the enemy. You have to kinda know when it's likely they may travel by way of where you are setting up ambush through experience of game flow. Sitting there like a dummy waiting for the opportunity that may not come is a fools enterprise, however.
I was catching on to a kennen player who was really raping us in team fights as he would come from the side areas into the middle lane to dash through the big gaggle of people. So I stopped warding the main spots as often and put more in the side areas closer to their base where it kept happening... during the next team fight, I see him sitting there waiting to dash in, I had a tornado charging up where he was coming, that hit him well and he had already turned on that lightning circle of his... after the knockup he still was about to charge in and I used my slow and then popped my ult, that knocked him back again. Then he got dumb and still wanted to charge in but my work interrupting him meant his cooldowns were wasted... watched our cho-gath eat his face and we were able to push through to his nexus before his spawn timer was done.
Wards though... so great. I dont kill much with janna, but its always funny to see them just sittin there like tards in a bush, sometimes stacked with 3 or more of them and send a tornado in there to let them know I see their dumb ass. I'm sure at higher level play the other team would grow a brain and buy an oracle to take out wards. I sometimes get an oracle... it seems that where I'm at, its rarely needed. Of course if they have a stealth champ I giggle as the players at my level rarely seem to think anyone will see through their stealth.
I played a game today against an Orianna. This chick stood in the bush and moved her ball all around, using all her abilities, and she never once went visible.
Is this supposed to happen? I think every other champion goes visible when an ability is used, but not her.
Am I wrong in thinking this? It is fucking annoying as hell.

There are tons of skills that do not reveal the champion when used in the bush. Nunu's ultimate is the first that comes to mind. I'm not too sure about some of these:

Yes, it benefits the whole team. And he should shut his fucking mouth. Oracles is punishment for playing a champ with stealth.
sending ad carries mid is out of style. ad carries lose to ap carries that's just how it is
A lot of AD carries got lazy is the problem. They didn't improve their skills, and not they cannot pay the bills, as they say.

Ugggghhhhh, it takes so long to level up. Seriously like a month of playing all the time and I'm level 18. I want to be 20 at least!
That Tryndamere last night was so bad. His rune page was all crit % and he went AP. I mean... that's bad, right? I have never seen a Tryndamere do that. He just kept shouting how he was the best and noobs always ruined his games. The enemy team told him to shut up and that Malphite was keeping them us in the game. Fuck yes! I'm a fucking lava man!
edit: Also had a Kat who bought two snowball items and went like 3-8-4.
So wow, what happened in the time I was gone that turned Eve into perma-ban. She used to be the big joke. Squishy melee who's only gimick was shut down by a potion and pink wards. Now I'm hearing her name and "game breaking" in the same sentence. Crazy go nuts.
Depends on how long it's been since you played. If I remember correctly someone on the euro servers made revive smite jungle Eve a thing, which turned her into a FOTM champ for awhile on the US servers. They nerfed her jungle ability just a little bit, but she can still be very nasty in a good player's hands.
Basically, she thrives against enemy teams that don't play conservative or coordinated. And she's annoying to play against as you have to waste money on pink wards and an earlier oracles, hence the bans.
Edit: I wish they'd just remove her from the game, but honestly I think the only real change she needs is to lose that stun coming out of stealth.

Yeah. I don't consider her OP at all, but she punishes mistakes very harshly and most importantly, is just completely unfun to play with. The only joy I get from playing against an Eve is the schadenfreude I get from making the game completely miserable for her by bursting her down at the beginning of every team fight with Oracles. Every time an Eve player doesn't have fun it feeds the dark part of my soul.
she forces passive play because early on you can't afford to drop a pink ward and exhaust+ignite eve is an easy way to pick up first blood at lv2. even if you have stealth detection it's far easier to counter stealth detection than it is stealth. Eve with an oracles and all your wards are useless.

Thornmail applies before armor. So you do 1000 dmg, you take 300 magic (-your MR obv, I think?), they have 66% reduce and take 333 dmg. You gain 25% of 333 dmg which is 83.25.
Sooooo!
edit: I just used random numbers, obviously, assuming that whoever has thornmail is fairly tanky and has ~200ish armor.

Not to mention that the person with thornmail will often have more HP than the one doing the attacking. Besides, it's a 2000 G item. Do you really expect it to sufficiently counter the autoattack of someone with 25% lifesteal? That'd be completely unfair.
You still take the damage, whether you counter it with lifesteal or not.
If you weren't taking the damage, you'd be gaining life, sure. But damage is damage, and a direct comparison between reflect and lifesteal is pretty useless. (Your effective health is your starting plus whatever lifesteal you can leech, you counter that with enough damage and/or stopping them from dealing lifesteal damage, thornmail is simply a source of damage.)
Thornmail is a nice mid game item for dealing with physical damage heavy teams, or of course Rammus who's passive synergizes nicely with it. I've never found much use for it beyond that though.
