I was finally able to download my free PS3-enabled copy of Portal 2 to my Macbook Pro, but I can't get it to play. I've tried searching for solutions online and have found forum threads that address this very topic, but none of them have any solutions.
I open the app (both on its own and through Steam) but before it starts, a dialog box popped up saying "steam2_osx has unexpectedly quit". I know the game can run on my machine, because I've heard of people able to use it on the same model, along with youtube videos showing it running on lower specced Macs.
I'm on a 2009 13 inch unibody Macbook Pro, with 4GB of RAM and the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics chipset.
Has anyone else had this problem and been able to fix it, or seen a fix for it anywhere?

Are you running the latest Snow Leopard? I know the system reqs said 10.6, but I'm not sure if that would cause the problem you're describing.
This is 100% an answer to a different question than you asked, but you might want to consider installing Windows via Boot Camp. OS X's graphic drivers / Steam engine port suck. When/if you get Portal 2 working in OS X, you'd still see significantly worse performance than if the game was running in Windows on the exact same machine.
Huh, I didn't know that about the OS X performance vs. Windows. You got any numbers for that? I've got Windows Seven and Ubuntu on the same machine so it's no problem, I'm just curious how much worse the performance is.
i would post this in the steam thread. it could just be the installation was funky. have you tried the obvious deleting local content and reinstalling or verifying the game cache? portal 2 runs flawlessly on my 2008 macbook
