I'm just going to rip this bandaid off right now.

    Actual goddamn spoilers, click at your own peril;
    Zalbarr is an ewok.

That's the twist. It should be pretty obvious before you leave Taris.

    Start up KOTOR II

    Beeline to Korriban ASAP

Go to the Shyrack Caves in the Sith Temple, find the room with a corpse in the middle

Quickly examine and exit the corpse menu several times over and over

Use chain lightning on the thousands of invisible Hssiss that fill the room until they are all dead

    Wash, rinse, repeat

    Get to level 50

    Win the game

Why all the Taris hate? Is it just because it's the area everyone's played through a million times?

I hope I'm not about to ruin your first run through for you... :?

You can only level your character twenty times throughout the game. Total. So the more times you level in the initial class you picked at character creation, the fewer times you're allowed to level your character in the future after picking your advanced class upon leaving Taris. So not only is it a long and drawn out section of the game which you were required to sit through before the story got really good and you were allowed to pick your advanced class, but the game actually punishes you for leveling your character on Taris by forcing you to have a weaker character by the endgame. You can refuse to spend the XP points they throw at you and horde them for additional levels in your advanced class if you want; however, doing that means that towards the end of Taris you're far below the character level for which many of the quests were designed.

This is really not strictly true. If you want to seriously power-game then saving levels is important, but those advantages require careful planning and are hardly necessary.

A level 2 (bare minimum allowed by the game) Soldier can make it through Taris just fine.

Lightsaber Jump + 5d6 Sneak Attack is hilarious. Rogues are really weak other than that trick, though.

It's not a particularly hard game. I played through on Very Hard with a melee Scoundrel/Consular at one point. Just do what you want to do. Especially the first time.

Some of you act like these games are impossible to beat unless you game the system and give yourself a really hard time during the first part of the game. This is not the case.

    2 problems with this,

You can't get into the cave until you're level 14+, it just rejects you.

You cant regain force points in the room unless you're darkside and you need to be level 18 for Force Storm.
Also, that corpse is Carth's son.

I uh, really liked Taris as the intro planet. It felt like a big bustling city with a lot of content, so I didn't mind spending time there.

Peragas on the other hand... hated that place. That level always kept me from replaying KOTOR 2. It's just this shitty empty station and you have to play through some sections as a dumb droid and... ughhh. Just horrible, horrible memories.

"Get to level 14, then beeline" is a pretty big caveat to leave out.

    It's sort of like saying.

    1. Go to visit the Queen of England.
    2. Swim across the Atlantic Ocean.
    3. Stroll down the street to Buckingham Palace.

You're abusing the term "beeline," man. Cut that shit out or it'll lose all meaning and we'll only have "as the crow flies" to fall back on.

Man, all this hate for Taris, and nobodies hating on Manaan?
    God damned uptight fish people.
God damned boring ass trial mission.
God damned slow ass running around under water.

A few pluses though, you can dupe your gear there to get mad money without playing Pazaak (or could on the Xbox version), also you can get the glitched lightsaber there as well which makes for some fun times.

Yeah except KOTOR 2 is arguably the easiest computer game of all time. I mean the combat was trivial , it's impossible not to be a god of destruction by the two thirds point.

A brief hint about Dantooine. Gameplay spoiler, sorta kinda mild story spoiler.
At a certain point in the story, you won't be able to go back to Dantooine. Finish all your business there before
Finishing your third planet, not counting taris or dantooine. You'll know when you've gone past the point of no return.

    ZING.

I think KoTOR/KoTOR II hold up pretty well by today's standards, what with the whole turn-based thing and all that. I hear widescreen is sort of an issue but my monitor is still 1280x1024 so I wouldn't know about that. The music and voice acting is still top notch, so even though you're not exactly playing The Force Unleashed or something, they're still fun experiences. And the inventory, while not the best, still blows Mass Effect out of the water. And no stupid minigames.
