Background story in FFXIII

Sorry if this isn't the right section..

So, I'm currently doing my first run through of FFXIII and I'm on Grand Pulse. What this topic is about is the lack of a back story and a clear lack of any sort of reaction of both Fang and Vanille on the situation on Grand Pulse. I mean during Mission 7, when you are in the center of the Paddraean Archaeopolis, in the datalogs it is reveled that the city was a thriving metropolis and now just ruins. It beggars belief that neither of these two comment on how ruined it was nor where the people went to. I am just in Chapter 11 and haven't yet visited their town, so maybe it is expanded upon, but seriously, they don't have any reaction at all. I mean even Taejin's Tower which is the largest structure in Grand Pulse, and now lies broken and their reaction is negligible.

I know its a game and I should take it easy but does this get expanded upon? If not, are there any sort of books which detail what actually happens on Grand Pulse? Any reaction from Fang and Vanille? I get the Ce'ith and the Undying, but is that is what is all left of Grand Pulse?

I believe it gets explained later and it makes more sense. Just hang in there.

Story spoilers if you can't wait:
Vanille and Fang were born in the distant past. 1000 years or so? I can't remember how long they said they were stuck in crystal form. A war between the two continents led to the destruction of Grand Pulse. I don't believe they go into much more detail than that.

Or I am remembering eveything wrong. Hopefully someone can confirm or deny this.
