Wanting a new 9mm pistol

Alright - so I'm in the market for a new 9mm. We have a gun show coming up here and I have full intentions on buying a new firearm. Right now I have a glock 22 (.40 caliber) and absolutely love it. Incredibly accurate, over 1000 rounds through it and no jams\misfeeds, and very easy to strip to clean it up after a day at the range.

I want a 9mm primarily for my wife. For her - my glock kicks a little too much (I really don't feel it or notice it) and I don't want to waste my money on a little .22 pistol. The two that I am looking at primarily is the springfield xd 9 - been getting pretty fantastic reviews lately, as well as the beretta 92fs. Any thoughts suggestions? I've fired both of these in the past and both are comfortable, and shouldn't be a problem at all for my wife. Or if there are any other good 9mm's out there that you would recommend, that would be great.

Is it going to be concealed?

No- primarily for the range. I don't have my concealed permit yet - don't really have much need for it.

More recent models of the P99 are a very nice pistol. Snub barrel also makes it a particularly good choice for women, easier aim, reduces weight & recoil. I forget exactly which issue model, but I think models sometime after 2004 incorporated all the important fixes from the original.

Unless it's a gift, I'd recommend getting her to test fire them both. The price is pretty much the same, so it would really just come down to personal preference.

I have a Sig Sauer P225 and like it quite a bit. Not a lot of kick, very reliable. Kind of expensive, though, at around $500 when my dad bought it.

The Springfield XD 9mm is very nice. I am buying one myself next weekend(payday). I like it because I have small hands and do not have a problem firing it and maintaining control. Another pistol I found to be very comfortable to shoot but kinda hard to find is an East German Makarov. It is not quite a 9mm, it is a 9x18, but is a very nice gun and very simplistic.

Have you checked with her to see if this is OK? Maybe she would prefer a .22. If she doesn't like the recoil of the 40 S&W, it's possible she might not like the recoil of the 9mm, either.

Yep. It would be a mistake to buy a firearm for a wife/girlfriend without getting her input. At the very least she should handle the firearm before purchase. The glock and beretta have different controls, different grip shapes, and different points of balance.

Try a Glock17. Same frame and size as the 22, but its in 9mm.

I've never fired a G22, but my dad had a G23, the compact .40, and I hated it. I have no complaints about my G17 though.

Go to a range that rents guns, and let your wife try some out. You could buy the nicest pistol in the world, but if it doesn't fit her hands it's useless. Also, buy a .22. They're the best way to introduce someone to shooting, and your marksmanship will improve too. Not to mention they're dirt cheap and great fun.

Anyway, I'd take a look at the SIG P226 (or the smaller 225) if you haven't already. Some of the nicest pistols made today.

I recommend the CZ-75B. It's exceptionally reliable and accurate. It's one of the original wonder nines like the Glock 17 and is currently in use with many different services in the US and Europe. It's quite reasonably priced too, though since it has become more popular you can't find one for as cheap as you used to.

I like the hk 9 sub compact. Light with a 10 round mag and I think you can go as high as 20 or 30. Feels good to shoot for such a small package. I got a friend who's got a 9 S&W but nobody really likes it. It doesn't fit in the hand very well. Heard good things about the Sig too. My lil brother really likes it.
