The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
it recognizes the tv, and if i arrange my displays adjacently, my pointer (and dragged windows) 'go off' to the telvision side
but it's all static or blackness with the occasional flicker of the desktop
it works 100% perfectly in windows, and used to work fine in osx
it stopped working in osx a couple months ago and now i just reformatted and that didn't fix it
it's recognized as 'zoran hdmi tv' in both windows and snow leopard, i think
Are you sure OSX is putting out the right resolution to the the TV?
System Preferences -> Displays, and then hit the "Gather Windows" button to get a list of available resolutions for both your main screen and TV. Flip through the list for the TV and see if any other resolutions work.
I'm not a mac guy, but I had to help a presenter recently who was trying to hook up his macbook to a projector and it was doing as you described. Somehow it got set to output at a rather high refresh rate that was fine for the laptop display but not for the projector. I dropped it back to 60hz or so and all was well.
