Question regarding PS3 internet connection

I currently have my PS3 on a wired connection. I am downloading one of the free games from the PS store.

It is currently downloading at a speed of about 1mb/9seconds.

My wireless connection reads 54mb/s on my laptop. I am uncertain of the standard speed for the wired connection.

What is the standard download speed for wired PS3 connections relative to your regular speed?

I know it is probably slow since the PS store is probably swamped right now but that is kind of rediculous.

I am at about 157 MB after 20 minues out of 7056mb.

What type and advertised speed of internet connection do you have?

Keep in mind that Sony has been hacked several times, and they were down for more than two weeks.

It is a DSL connection. I am unsure of the advertised speed since I was not the one that created the account with our internet provider.

I am getting conflicting results. My router says i am getting 1500 kbps while my laptop says it has a connectino speed of 54 mbps.

54 mbps is your network speed, as in, the theoretical speed data can be transported between computers on your network. With DSL, you probably have either 2 or 3 meg down, and 256k up. Both, again, theoretical.

Ignore ALL the theoretical speeds. The PSN store has been up for 2 days now and today was the launch of the FREE games through the store. 75 MILLION people (Sony's numbers) theoretically can be downloading 7 GB over the next 2 days. So they are more than a little swamped.

Matt is correct. You get the max of what your ISP is. And again that's THEORETICAL max.

Yeah, what matthasaproblem said. You won't get 54Mb/s downloading things from outside your local network unless your network connection actually supported that speed.

Your router is telling you the speed that it's connected at to the outside world, so that's the hypothetical speed you can download at. If you're only at 1.5Mb/s, your downloading speed seems correct.

You said you downloaded 157MB in 20 minutes. Since network speeds are reported in bits instead of bytes, multiply that by 8 to get 1256Mb in 1200 seconds, or just over 1Mb/s.

Thanks! I had to Macgyver a way to get my PS3 a wired connection since the way the house is wired, the ethernet cable is no where near a tv so I wanted to make sure if there was any difference between the wired and wireless connection (I know wired is faster for computers but wasn't sure with the PS3).

The wired connection on the PS3 is definitely faster, but that's not why you're getting slow speeds here. It's because everyone else is downloading everything they can as well.

Well you might as well leave it going now. Just tell it to turn off when the downloads are done.

Just leave it on. Regardless of how many people are hitting the PSN store right now, if you only have around a 1.5Mb DSL connection, even at maximum speed it's going to take 10+ hours to download a 7GB file.

and FYI, it's not THAT bad. I've since come home and downloaded LittleBigPlanet (2 gigs) in under 3 hours (went out to the movies and done when I came back).

So it might just be your slow internet.

I've been having issues with PSN too. When I downloaded some DLC yesterday, my download rate was slow. My download rate on my laptop is as it usually is, so it looks like there's something on the PSN side. I'm also having an error message that my ethernet cable is unplugged alot and getting disconnected, even when I know it isn't. Random freezes too.

    PSN is notoriously slow.

Either way, if you want to be safe, start the download and then pause it. It'll be in your download history for later, I suppose.

I'm sure millions of people worldwide trying to get their free games, after it being down for a month is helping. That said I'm getting around 1.2MBps, right now which is just shy of my 12Mbps connection.

Slight hijack here, but does anyone know why having the Internet Connection enabled on my PS3 makes game loading literally 5-10 times slower than with it disabled? Cut scenes stutter like crazy too. I have Media Center (I think that's what it's called) disabled as well. I'm not downloading anything while playing either.

EDIT: This has been happening since I bought the PS3 over a year ago.
