I am an OG (Original Gamer) who has been playing video games since Atari's Pac-Man was state of the art. I don't plan on giving up gaming any time soon but, I'm currently without a system and limited to using my pc. That would be fine since there are alot of good free-to-play games on the net. With an abundance of free online fps and mmorpgs available i should be able to get my fix while staying within my tight budget. f2p games almost make using my "middle-end" pc better than using a console, BUT...
Where are the Free-to-play mmo fighting games???!!!!
EHEM... Let the rant begin ...
1. Flash Fighters
There are 2d online flash fighters that are ok (SFO and KOF Online) but the have limited character selections and no customization at all. After playing mmorpgs and being able to craft fighting moves and skills with my own style and tactics, being so limited in those flash fighters is kind of boring.
2.MMORPGs
Yes the customization of style and function turned me out, but the standard combat system turned me away. "Auto-attack"? Why? ... Did that guy say "Turn-Based"? BURN HIM! Why have all of those cool skills, spells and attacks when you are limited to such boring battles. Atari's Joust is more intense. Some might say that style has more room for strategy during battle. What? IMO Street Fighter 4 has more strategy per battle than those WOW rip-offs because its real time and you can block or dodge any attack at will, making timing and tactics very important. Oh, you "auto-attack" lovers wanna argue about it?
Lets settle this with some pvp. how about your way first... -we stand still right in front of each other attacking back and forth in rhythm like we are dancing. you throw your favorite attacks. i throw my favorite attacks and we let our "block stat" decide when our character blocks otherwise taking the full brunt of each-others high level attacks. the winner pf this match was already decided by our overall stats and we are really just going through the motions. But you ended up winning because i fell asleep from boredom and left my character auto-attacking with the basic attack..
OK, ROUND 2. MMORPG PVP MY WAY
-You throw your super powerful spell and i jump over it and kick you. after my kick i try to throw a close punch kick combo but you counter with a close up explosion that knocks me back and use it as a way to keep me from rushing you again. Then you throw another spell (because you put together skills made for fighting at at a distance) and I'm forced to keep blocking while i figure out a strategy to counter yours (because the skill set i chose is focused on close combat). I side step your next ice spell and rush in with a quick kick then jump back b4 for explosion trick and hit you with my stun attack (that i cant spam you with because the game designers were smart enough to give stun attacks a long cool down time). I follow up with the strong but slow heavy sword thrust skill i just got, and it criticals you so you jump back out of my range and hold block while you use your second to last health pack while realizing that using the explode skill like that again will put you right back in the same situation again. you then throw a poisoning spell as soon as i start the motion of my block-breaking thrust skill and stuns me long enough for you to jump back 5 times while waiting out the poison spell cool down time (with the poison spell taking 5 hp per second from me for almost the same amount of time) then you catch me running in and you throw your "slow" spell and then another quick poison spell. you plan to keep using this "gun and run" tactic until my hp is low enough for you new level 12 fire ball to finish me. I have other plans of coarse...- The Epic battle rages on...
Any way, i wish mmorpg combat could be more like that but its not so screw them.
3. Dungeons and Dragons Online
Finally an mmorpg with skill customization and a good combat system, but it seems to have this annoying emphasis on pve while making pvp, WTF! Having an action based combat system focusing on pve is like having the worlds best tasting lollipop and saying i can only use it to hammer nails. thier pvp is unbalanced with high attack power and low hit points. that is perfect for crushing hords of enemy NPCs, but with pvp, instead of the epic battles like the one i explained b4, its boom boom boom one of us is dead. DDO is a good game but not what I'm looking for.
4. Rakion
Close but no cigar. 3D with mmorpg style classes, the ability to block at will, pure pvp focus!!! This is it! nope the game is a tacticians nightmare with balance that will make a mage lover like myself rip their own head off after five minutes of play. the game takes a perfect combat system and ruins it in two ways. first it is missing a lock-on system. instead of opponents squaring off and having "epic battles", you get a room full of characters looping around in circles trying to get behind each other making blocking almost impossible. add to that the fact that you cant back up so you have to turn your back on your opponent in order to try to put some distance between you and him.
second of all, there is this stupid need to separate the close and long range move sets with a painfully long weapon switch time. during witch you are imoble and open to attack. this is not much of a problem for those who use the close range classes that just rush in on any opponent they see, but for the poor mage who is only good at mid to long range, switching to the melee move set takes just enough time for your opponent to run up on you and combo you. keeping your long range weapons out is not an option because your attacks go right around close opponents and btw you cant block at all while using the long range move set
.
I've never been so stressed out by playing a video game in my life. Skrew that game!
also there is no skill customization at all and only 5 lame classes. I might as well play SFO it has over 15 fighters i think.
5.Dynasty Wariors Online
Just like what i said about Rakion but with no need to switch move sets and the ability to back up. but only while blocking. you still see a lot of loopy running around and other ugly hit and run tactics.
6...
and here we go...
6.The actual Free to Play "mmo fighting games" i found that pissed me off enough to write this in the first place.... Rumble Fighter, Lost Saga, Get Amped 2, and all of those other Mario 64 looking so called fighting games out there.
first off, lets round up all of the designers for those types of games and use there brains like parsley in a giant, creativity free salad. Are you guys serious? you cant be serious. You call these fighting games? Hey scorpion, finish these lames!
Hold on, let me calm down. How are you gonna make a "fighting" game were the characters cant BLOCK?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hey scorpion, go down to hell, find these game developers and finish them again! And don't worry because they can't block it.
Why do your character designs look like the game is meant for kindergarteners? I'm a 30 year old OG just looking for a good fight after work. You mean this is all i have to choose from? Hey Scorpion!!! no better yet, hey Sonic the Hedgehog, find all of those little kiddy characters and roll on them fools. Yea, Smash them Bros. Man, Kirby looks more menacing.
Yea, the games I mentioned in part 6 aren't even on my radar. really none of the games i mentioned in this 6 part rant are what i'm looking for.
If any one can send me to a good free mmo fighter, non-flash original online fighter or an mmorpg with an action based combat system and good pvp, please fill me in because these are all i found.
pleas only games that allow you to block at will.

The main reason MMO combat is typically turn-based or pseudo-turn-based is a network technology limitation. You have a server or server farm which can only have so much bandwidth, and you're trying to dole it out among hundreds of thousands of users. Even console/arcade fighting games are bound by this limitation and often have to use a high upstream bandwidth host to reduce the latency to a playable level. It never performs as well as both clients being in the same room playing on the same console.
And lay off the "OG Original Gamer" speech. No one cares. Seriously.
Do you like Will Wheaton? Do you own a man skirt, sometimes known as "Utilikilt" or "'Tool' pants"?
It makes us old.
As to the matter of fighter MMO's, what you describe sounds highly intricate, and I can't even imagine the timing you're aiming for with dozens or even hundreds of people all in the same place. Games like WoW and its kin may be simplified on a lot of levels, but that simplicity allows for a huge variety of games (skill level, hardware, location, bandwidth, reaction times) to play cooperatively and competitively without a massive edge being gained by a minor edge in one of those fields. Try to make it so intricate and complex with split second timing and I can only imagine the collision detection alone would be a nightmare.
Granted, I am not a programmer, perhaps I'm wrong.
I suppose if the demand arises for such a product then one day a company will take a stab at it, but with MMOs taking years to be released and costing tens of millions of dollars to get off the ground, I'd be surprised if it were anytime soon.
