The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Initial impressions seemed to suggest it was well on its way to being the next big thing in gaming, some even going as far as suggesting it will uproot Blizzard's flagship World of Warcraft series - which really isn't that much of a stretch considering WoW is a 7-year-old game that's actually been losing players lately and is currently at around 11 million active subscriptions, down from 12 million.
Right now, this is the most exciting game in development. As the aforementioned Force-choked trooper slides to the floor, clutching his chest, a horrifying truth becomes apparent: The Old Republic is a credible World of Warcraft killer.
They're going to make a true online sequel to classics like Knights of the Old Republic and Baldur’s Gate. It will be a game with proficient, modern production values, fully voiced cutscenes and multi-threaded conversations. It will reduce the grind – removing the tedious fetch 10 and kill 20 quests that plague the genre – and tie everything into their story. It will introduce genuine consequence, giving parties of players the kind of moral choices their single-player games have become famous for.
All that said, BioWare has done a great job in bringing the Star Wars universe to an MMO. And when you consider the entire game is different for each of the four player classes (Sith Warrior, Bounty Hunter, Smuggler and Trooper) with zero repetition of quests between them, you're looking at a doubly massive MMO.
Fans may have been put out that they're not getting a true sequel to Knights of the Old Republic 2. But with the story-telling elements of this MMO so comparable to dedicated single-player experiences, BioWare had an easy answer for them at the end of the Gamescom presentation:
"This is Knights of the Old Republic 3. And 4. And 5. And 6. And 7..."
But then later previews from sources like PC Gamer have been less enthusiastic and now it's looking like this could potentially be very costly for EA/BioWare if it doesn't succeed since they've already invested over $300 million into this project. So now I'm not really sure what to believe anymore. I want to be optimistic but I guess I'll have to wait until the game is closer to its release next year to get a better idea of what's going on.
I watched a one and a half hour video of someone playing in the beta a few weeks ago, and it looked boring as all fuck. Granted, the guy was just doing a bunch of soloing and grinding.

We have a thread for this in the MMO sub-forum.
And yes, it will make money for them, it's star wars.
I hope the best for it, but i still wish they had made KoToR 3 instead.
My bad. I didn't see it in gaming general and forgot to check the sub-forum. I can't delete this so I guess I'll leave it up to the mods.
