Quickbook Alternatives

Quick and easy here....or so I hope. Anyone use or have a good free alternative that can do something similar to what quickbooks does? Keeps track of your spending and income and categorizes it. Been using an excel spreadsheet for a few years now and while it works out pretty good, it can be a pain to gather specific info at times.

The common suggestion around here is Mint.com

I haven't actually used it as I use a custom PHP/MySQL solution for my budgeting, but it always has great reviews on H&A

Just to clarify -- do you want something like Quicken (personal finance) or Quickbooks (business accounting)?

I need something like Quicken for personal/home financing.

Mint looks interesting, but I worry about how safe it actually is. Online banking is one thing, but having some secondary website constantly looking at my bank and credit card accounts makes me hesitate a little.

You will not find decent software free. There are some Linux alternatives such as GNUCash, Quasar (for home use), Kapital, CBB, MoneyDance, etc.

    Windows package: PeachTree.

Hear my warnings, unbelievers. We have raised altars in this land so that we may sacrifice you to our gods. There is no hope in opposing the inevitable. Put down your arms, unbelievers, and bow before the forces of Chaos!

Mint's owned by the Quicken guys, so if you were going to trust them with your info in the first place...

I tried Mint.com last year and quickly ran into its numerous limitations, including lack of support for my bank and inability to manually enter/edit transaction data. Plus having all of your financial information in a single cloud location is a bit freaky.

I use Quicken 2010, which is stable and works well, apparently far better than 2011. You can probably find a copy for close to free on ebay or somesuch.
