Triggers+Stylus can substitute for multitouch somewhat, but yeah. I'm excited.

He emphasizes that Nintendo hasn't really officially announced any titles for the Wii U. The corporate side wants to stick to the company line, but personally he just wanted to announced Pikmin.
I understand the corporate side -- they really want the 3rd party games to be front and center. But we all knew Nintendo was working on shit. And now we have "Not" announced Pikmin, and "Not" announced Smash Bros... Damnit, when is F-Zero's anniversary?!

2016 I think? Yeah, have fun waiting for that :P (edit: 2015 in Japan)
But hey, 2011 is also Metroid's 25th anniversary... Nintendo remembered that righ...awww.... (they do technically have until August, and they fucking missed Zelda's by a mile, so...)

no more, other m hurt me, leave her rest for 40 years untill the genaration that brought other m have passed on and a new generation came with only knowing of the last metroid game being prime 3.
Jesus, if this thing isn't clearly more powerful than PS3 there's really no point. It would be ok for the first year or two, and then it would be like the Wii. Completely outclassed by everything else on the market, and just a diversion I use when I'm tired of my PC or whatever actual, serious gaming device I'm using. I don't blame Nintendo for sticking with their new casual audience, but they really need to future proof this thing if... ah, who am I kidding, it's gonna be the Wii all over again. /cry

Eh, I was pretty underwhelmed by their conference, the more I think about it. Most of what they announced are just rehashed ports, aside from their core franchises.
The original titles, NoA haven't said word one about.

Just make it 2d, not voice acted, and keep Team Ninja way the fuck away from it and it'll be fine.

I think you mean keep Sakamoto away from it, because he's the one responsible for pretty much every bad thing in Other M.

If that's true, I'm happy! I read someone saying a page or two back that it was less powerful than 360. Do we know anything about its horsepower?

Nintendo doesn't release hardware specs. Not after the Gamecube.

I liked Prime/Fusion and they had stories. I think a story on par with them, or Zero mission, is about my ideal for a Metroid game.

There is a contingent of people who are incapable of being pleased or impressed by Nintendo.
The hard truth is that we don't know much of anything concrete about how powerful the system is in comparison to others.
Rumblings from developers suggest that it is absolutely more powerful than the the 360. At this point, though, some people would rather it be ludicrously more powerful than a console that is six years old rather than "kinda-sorta" more powerful.
The best approach, rather than going off the handle based on rumor and speculation like many others, is to wait and see for yourself.
So how long until Epic announce that the Unreal engine won't work on WiiU either? :P
Mark Reign was already gushing about the fact that a UE3 game (the Aliens game) was already running on the hardware. So, never, apparently.
Yeah, Unreal can run on the WU, apparently.
Well, it wasn't a question of IF it can run. (Any developer could port their UE3 game on their own, like they would port an entirely from-scratch game) It's that Mark Reign, who's a bigwig at Epic, was actively supporting the idea which is the important bit, as it likely means there will be developer support for porting to the WiiU, which means a developer won't have to do it the hard way.

You know, awful flashbacks and cutscenes aside, Metroid Other M is a really cool game.

it's already confirmed that the wii u is using power7 architecture for its cpu, which is cutting edge and even at minimized specs completely blows the xenon and cell out of the water.
nintendo could always gimp the console with a horrible gpu and ram bottleneck, but if they're willing to go for a power7, they'll probably be willing to avoid any crazy bottlenecks.
Also, keep a couple points in mind. I too was incredibly underwhelmed by the bird tech demo. It looked mediocre. However, there's apparently a much more impressive tech demo that journalists are raving about that nintendo isn't showing to the public because they are all on crazy pills. Also:
- Both the bird and Zelda tech demos were apparently in 1080p at 60fps
- When we saw the bird demo, it was over a stream which apparently hid a lot of its more subtle details
- The bird demo was, according to reggie, made awhile ago using early hardware
- Both the bird and Zelda demos were in real time.
Personally, I think the Zelda demo looks stunning.

I think Nintendo is doing a Big Dare, here.
We see this new system. It looks alright. It does! It's not the slam dunk a lot of people expected, but its also doing something risky and weird. It's also not coming out for another 18 months.
They have some readymade examples of what it could do. Me, I'm imagining the freakiest version of Fatal Frame known to man, and a billion other things. But they don't show it. Just some WiiSports-style proof of concepts that are explicitly NOT games.
And then third party games, ostensible third party support, third party leaders raving about the system.
Now.
If you're competing against Nintendo, what do you do? You know what Nintendo is planning...kind of. But you can't tell how well it's gonna be pulled off, and how successful it will be at what it does.
Do you try to create something like it and try to get it done before the end of 2012? Do you let them do their own thing and risk letting them get all the gold coins again? What do you do?
Nintendo competition know just enough about what's being done to make a bad decision about it.
No way in hell MS and Sony will rush something out for 2012, it just doesn't work that way.
Really, Sony and MS need to move onto new consoles by 2014 at the latest IMO. The Xbox will be 9 years old by that point, and the PS3 8, which IMO is a plenty long life span. If they wait any longer, they run the risk of losing ANY advantage of putting a new system out vs Nintendo, as Nintendo could just wait a couple years and put out a new system again after a normal lifespan.
Still, we could be seeing a schism between release dates, where instead of them being clusters, they alternate between Sony/MS and Nintendo, which could be weird.

I retract my statement then... I'm just so shell shocked from Wii. Sorry if I sounded like a troll :P
I'm sorry, but people bitching that it won't be better "enough" than the PS3 or 360 are just trolling. Graphics are hitting the point where they can't actually get much better looking without either a huge step up in resolution display (which we're not getting in home theater's any time soon), or full 3D. And I don't mean 3D on a 2D display, I'm talking full holographics.
I think Frostbite 2 is going to set the standard for the industry for the foreseeable future. If the TripleU can handle that fine, then it's going to do anything that can be asked of it. I would, absolutely, love to see it step up and handle the full 32v32 maps for BF3. If they could pull THAT off, then you'd see Nintendo make a clearly defined statement, that they are the console to beat.
But as for what console power actually means, it's not just the fidelity but the content and load times that matter. If the developers can fill up their 25/50gb media (not sure which is accurate) with quality voice acting, and large open world maps, the power is already here in the current generation to make them look amazing. It just means you get a greater quantity of amazing and they have to skimp less.

I think the major thing holding the Wii back in Shitsville was the resolution. Once they display in 1080p it won't be so much of an issue if they're not pushing as many polys or running better physics.

No, next MS console to be named the XBro. All games to star a white guy with short cut hair.
Next Sony console to be named the Playstation-Not-Nintendo. It'll have the same features of a Nintendo console but it'll come in black.
