one of the worst conferences ever. it raised more questions than it offered answers, and on the whole felt like a really confusing clusterfuck. there was no real displays of proof of concept and absolutely nothing to get excited about outside of SS and a meager serving of 3DS titles.
They completely ignored the wii entirely this year and I find that mind boggling.
They showed zero footage of WiiU games outside of tech demos (admitted by Reggie himself).
It felt like they really had nothing at all to show, so they kind of dwaddled around and stretched things out as much as possible. That conference was so empty and devoid of excitement. Underwhelming would be putting it very very lightly.
I think they won the show. Though I didn't watch Sony's keynote, they were definitely better than Microsoft's.
I think it has a ton of potential. The controller would be a decent interface for console RTS games as well. I'm not sure why i'd want to place it on the ground to whack a golf ball, that seems gimmicky and not useful, but I liked the pointing the controller at the screen to catch a ball or using it as a scope (Or a camera, pokemon snap?). As long as it doesn't cost $texas and they get some good games (Which it seemed they had no shortage of) AND they get their heads out of their asses for online, it'll be a success. And they've been pulling their heads out slowly, as seen on the 3DS and such.
Overall, great idea. And it's backwards compatible with everything!
Also, 3DS virtual console makes me giddy-i'm-13-again-excited.
Reggie just confirmed (on GTTV) the WiiU controller has a single-touch screen, not multitouch.
Seriously? This is one area they really need to forget about cost.
Help me out here
Without multitouch, developers won't be able to make games that take advantage of iPhone style controls, such as pinch/stretch, which could lead to very interesting gameplay.
I didn't see this, but did he mean a single-touch screen, or a single touch screen (i.e. not like the vita)? I guess I'd have to see the video.
I think it's a bit far off yet for anything to be set in stone, though. It'll be interesting to see what they can do with it, at least it's something new.
All of the major keynotes have been pretty underwhelming really, for different reasons. Maybe I'm just too old and jaded. I mean, there are a ton of awesome games coming out and all, but there haven't really been any bombshells that I didn't already know about going in to E3.

Or is it a question of precision; are multi's more accurate?
You couldn't do something like, say, a piano where you press multiple notes at once to form a cord. Another example would be something like pinching your fingers close or apart to change the zoom level.
I don't know how necessary it would be for most game applications, but I do think it would be beneficial.
Edit: To be fair, I'm not really clear on what the cost difference would be here. If it's not a huge difference (~$10-20ish range?), I don't see why you wouldn't do it.
Oh, I'd agree that it seems better to just have it; I just couldn't think of a good reason.
So... There are no new Wii games coming out now. Ever? And the new console is about a year away? I don't know if I can think of a precedent here, other than maybe the Dreamcast. So weird.

The N64 and the Cube both spluttered pretty hard in their last year. Then again, there are still plenty of new Wii games coming out, just none that this board would really give a shit about.
Besides, have you ever tried touching a single-touch pad on a laptop in two areas at once? It goes bonkers. How will they handle that on this?
Like this. This is a good reason.
I'm doing this on my laptop touchpad right now, and nothing is happening. It just tracks one of my fingers at a time. I think it's safe to say that we already have the technology.
Has everyone clamoring about console details and specs forgotten about how the Wii was announced? The controller came first, then the console was revealed 6 months later. It worked for Nintendo last time, why did you think they would change it this time?
Wiiu is the worst name. It's already confusing people into thinking it's an add on to the Wii. They should have been a little more clear about it. And they should name it something else.
The 3DS games all look great, but most of it we've been seeing since it came out. Luigi's Mansion 2 was a nice surprise though, and Mario Kart can't come out soon enough.
Seeing peoples faces in Star Fox is stupid and I hope you can turn it off.
3v3 in Kid Icarus? With multiplayer mario kart and star fox, did you really have to delay Kid Icarus for this?
It's fine if Nintendo wanted to be cagey about prices and dates for the Wii U but to not have dates on the 3DS stuff coming this year was just disappointing.
I think the Wii U looks awesome, but I'm more interested in the aspects they were pointedly not talking much about, traditional button games with pretty graphics.
I'm sorry but don't all consoles start out with tech demos?
Hell, that's all Kinect still is.

The thing with this is pretty much the same as with the wii.
The pre-launch stuff pretty much hyped up how it was going to be filled with awesome games and innovative use of the motion controls. I bought into the hype, I was pretty much salivating about the different awesome ways developers could implement the wii-mote.
And then we got lots of shovelware and waggle.
Edit: Not to say that it won't sell a bajillion units, but still.

Xenoblade and Last Story are still coming out.
Are they coming out in NA? To be honest, this is the only thing I've been disappointed with so far. It seems like NoA is choosing to ignore them.

In the US? You sure about that?
Edit: There's a bunch of videos up on the 3DS shop, including one of Animal Crossing and Paper Mario!
I don't know if this has been posted yet but apperantly it uses a top of the line Power7 processor from IBM which is supposedly leagues ahead of the CPU used in 360 and PS3.
I'm optimistic. I didn't see the keynote so I don't care how interesting or not it was.
As for the WiiU itself, I think the controller is nice. I can see some great uses for it. Pulling the UI off of the main screen is already a nice perk. Multitouch is a bit of a silly thing to worry about seeing as the controller has a ton of buttons and levers already. You will probably only have one finger to spare anyway.
As for the graphics argument. It's stupid.. at least from my perspectives. Consoles are not about graphics.. my PC can probably already push better graphics than an Xbox720.

I hoping for a name like Super Wii or Ultra Wii or at least Wii2
I really dislike WiiU.
Think about how everybody felt about the Wii. I think at this point, silly names are part of the biz.
As for price, this is a company that has never taken a loss on their consoles or handhelds as far as I know. (I've heard rumors of when the GC first went to $99, but nothing concrete). I'm pretty sure they know how to price well.
I was going to say the Dreamcast had those little VMUs that you'd plug into the controller, mainly to save your progress on various games, but didn't a few of the games also have some extra little sidebits to do with the VMUs?
At least the touchscreen is built into the controller, making it a lot harder to ignore, and probably a good idea for Nintendo to try to encourage developers to do things with it. Best examples I can give are exactly the kinds of thing that the DS already does. Create/edit maps in games like Etrian Odyssey, turn on/switch between apps in games like Pokemon. It doesn't have to be the focal point of every new game designed for the system - just a support element to enhance gameplay.

So you're saying this system will outsell everyone else and be wildly popular?

Hahaha... that controller shape... hope that's not final. Looks terrible.
I got a Wii on release... I'm a sucker for Zelda. Same will happen with this. Whether or not Zelda is on release I dont really care.
I could care less about what the graphics look like at this point... although I like good graphics, since I'm a PC gamer 90% of the time.
I see some saying they dont think the "initial" graphics look that much better, or in some cases worse, than 360/PS3. Well shit, you gotta actually develop graphics better first... that doesnt mean the hardware cant do better. Graphics are at a saturation point... The Witcher 2, is probably the first time Ive been impressed with graphics in a few years. The last times before that I think was Uncharted 2 and Crysis.
But seriously, graphics are currently a representation of effort and money. Not, "OMG your console sux, lololol!" People argue about the difference in a few pixels nowdays, as if it really matters. The only stuff that sticks out is laggy, buggy, unplayable crap... which again isnt the hardwares fault, its the effort of the developer and money that went into making the game.
Until there is a really detailed breakdown in the memory, gpu, cpu and shit... we wont know what its capable of (or is there one already?).
I don't know if this has been posted yet but apperantly it uses a top of the line Power7 processor from IBM which is supposedly leagues ahead of the CPU used in 360 and PS3.
Definitely fake. The other sheet says no GC, and external hard drive support. This one is trying so hard to look real with the "internal use only" stuff...it can't be accurate. I think someone made it before they saw the real sheet and could incorporate the actual facts to make it look plausible.

The controller seems really good. They better put out some new Four Swords for it. And Pikmin, if Pikmin doesn't show up next year I will riot.
My concern is basically if they are going to future proof the hardware. If they don't I think support and sales will slump after about 2 years when MS and Sony's new consoles obliterate it.

Why pinch zoom when you have L1 L2, with stylus in the other hand? You can point and zoom at the same time.

Why would you want a vita now, especially because 3ds is useful with your Wii-U console.
if that's real then good on them.
BC with gamecube would be pretty nice.
not to mention actually coming with a hard drive
