System Specs: Nintendo have been wary giving out individual hardware specs since the PS2 and OXbox specs apparently trounced those of the GCN.
This is wrong.
The GCN was more powerful then the PS2 and on par with the Xbox (some things the Xbox could do better, some things the Gamecube could do better)
Yeah I know that. I guess you didn't read what I said.
(edit) To elaborate; Anyone old enough to remember the lead up to the GCN and Xbox launch would remember these numbers being thrown around.
Xbox: 103 Million Triangles per Sec
PS2:66.6 Million Triangles per Sec
GameCube: 6-12 Million Triangles Per Sec
While Sony and Microsoft touted unrealistic and raw numbers, Nintendo was much more conservative with its estimates. Tech Heads of the day agreed. But it was still something the fan boys clinged to on message boards. Since that gen Nintendo don't really give out specs anymore, and they're usually leaked by a hardware manufacturer down the line. The devs know the specs because they are building games on the hardware, and Joe consumer need not know because it doesn't mean much to them anyway. We could jerk off over gigaflops and pixel pipelines till we're blue in the face, the point I was trying to make is that it doesn't matter.
New controller looks cool. Well, 'looks' super weird, but is pretty exciting.
Nintendo consoles have always been eventually worth buying just for the exclusive games (I'm still waiting on the 3DS...) so once the price and game availability are in alignment this will be a definite buy for me. If it up-scales Wii games maybe it will even be a Day 1 purchase.
We will have to see how powerful it "really" is, and how easy it is to develop for. It might even be the "lead" platform for some multi-platform games.
Welp, I get the feeling Nintendo is going to try to set a record for controller prices with this thing.
They will, but I don't see it as being too big of a record. The controller itself is basically an enlarged DS touch screen (resistive touch screen, standard LED backlight), speakers, and streaming hardware shoved into a traditional controller. Since the controller won't have to have any rendering or processing duties of its own, costs will be kept down somewhat. My guess is in the $79.99-$99.99 range, give or take, which isn't that much more than a silver 360 play and charge kit was at launch.
Nobody seems to mind paying $69.99 for extra pairs of 3D glasses for the sony monitor (which you need for every person), and it doesn't seem like you need more than one tablet controller, so I think it'll be okay.

Because it needs to said (for probably the 50-hojillionth time today)...
Wii U? Moar liek PU.
Seriously though...we all laughed when the Revolution officially became the Wii, but the name didn't stop it from printing money. I'll give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt on this one.
I assume that this fall we'll get all the fun details (release date, launch titles, price, etc.).

I hope they don't plan to get their hardware premium on the controller included in the price of a console w/ controller.
Well, they might but I will balk at anything above 299. Of course, with me living in Sweden, 299 dollars MSRP will come to 2999 Swedish Krona, which is about 487 fucking dollars. Yes, I know about purchasing power and wage levels etc., but still.
For reference, an average new console game comes to about 100 dollars on release here in Sweden, portable games and PC games at about 65. An iPhone 4 16 GB will come to 900 and above.

Not sure if I am reading this correctly, but are you saying that the Wii U should not cost more than $300, even if it is theoretically more powerful than a 360 or PS3, and probably won't be sold at a loss?

I guess I am not coming across properly, sorry.
I am thinking with MY wallet here. I am not going to be able to make Nintendo put the price tag I want on there. I said I will balk at a price of above 3000 SEK, or about 490 dollars at the current rate. For further reference, in Sweden a starting wage for someone who is about 18 and has a high school exam will be about 3000 dollars a month, with a little luck.
I will be studying until fricking 2014 until I have my Masters in some Econ. or Business field, so I hope to make a substantial amount more when I start working. Until then, I have to be stingy.
Especially since I was bitching so massively about other people's spending on useless DLC in another thread.

More power does not necessarily equal more cost. I'd be very surprised if they weren't targeting around the base hardware costs as the Wii 1 in '06.

Sure, I'm not trying to say it has to have any specific price. I was just trying to see if I was understanding Absalon's post - which I wasn't.
Reggie has a pretty good interview on Gametrailers where he says it will be priced "competitively."

Holy hell Skyward Sword's graphical style is fucking bland.
It also somehow looks LESS graphically intensive than Twilight Princess. The hell?
Now, I am not automatically going to buy Skyward - I don't like the talk about puzzles and all that WM+ chatter. That's not interesting to me. All that talk about enemies being defeated via puzzle thinking -no thanks. So I'm not calling you a heretic or something.
But the visuals look... Sober. Dusty. Think old Greek ruins or oooold Mediterranean towns. That sunbleached look. I like it.

I googled that interview. It's pretty encouraging on the whole. Reggie seems to suggest that the WiiU online capability will be in the same style as Live and PSN. I might be overly optimistic in hoping that is what he meant.
You lucky assholes, I was having my eyes dialated and pressure-checked and flashed and poked and prodded and all other manner of shit while this was going down.
New Luigi's Mansion and Kirby more than make up for it, though.
The GT interview said they'll be exploration of islands like Windwaker, except you'll be flying in the sky and be able to dismount at any time.
Excited for that.

I can certainly see myself picking up a 3DS by the end of the year. Maybe by the end of the summer. Luigi's Mansion, yeeeeeessssssss!
edit: I agree, Skyward Sword looks great. It's fucking Zelda, I'm absolutely going to pick it up, and I'm going to love it damnit.

I don't like the look of those stupid goblins and I am sure there will be some moments where the lack of fidelity in a brush or other vegetation will irk me. And the textures? Meh.
But I think it looks better than Twilight Princess, lack of fairytale-resembling water and other effects be damned. TP just looked like a sooty Okami with pretty generic designs overall ( with exceptions, of course).

Yeah, like, I'm not saying I think it needs to be some super HD thing or darker or anything. It just looks generic. That doesn't mean it looks BAD, I just don't look at the game and immediately go "Oh, that stands out.".
Maybe it'll look better in person, I don't know. Also I hated the art style of WW. Not that it was cel shaded (some of my favourite games are cel shaded and look great) just the character and world design itself. I know a lot of people don't agree with me, but meh, it just wasn't 'for me'.
I really don't think the specs are final right now. There is likely a year and a half before release, so there is time to tweek things. Probably waiting until the last second to see how powerful they can get it while keeping it at $299. That last second will probably be a couple months away. At release, I'd be very surprised if it isn't the most powerful console on the market. Thing is, how long will that last?
I will probably go exclusively Nintendo next time because of the small amount of must play titles. I went Wii/360/DS this gen and have a massive stack of games I will never find time to get to. Last gen I only had a Gamecube/GBA, and the incredible 1st party release 2-3 times a year plus the occasional third party gem was perfect.
It'll be tough to see the AAA gold go by on other consoles, but since I would never have time to play them properly, I will somehow manage. I got by without a PS2, so I can do it.
I just want good games. I don't care about 3D, I don't care about motion control, and I sure as fuck don't want an ipad controller. If this WiiU has good games that don't rely on gimmicky touch screen or motion control stuff, and it lets me use a regular controller, I might try it some time.
