Super 8 - A Film of Young Love, Mystery Boxes, and Lens Flares
So this movie comes out tomorrow! Qmark and I've already seen it and we think that yes, it's good and you most likely won't regret seeing it, but it does have problems.
My problems with it are kinda spoilery, so I'll just say that among the positives are that the acting, especially with the kid actors, is great. Cinematography is really well-done and Abrams, for the most part, stages the action really well. The score by Michael Giacchino is also very nice, not really trying to emulate John Williams, and you can hear a snippet of it at the website. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqvZMhRB5cE
I kinda get the impression that its a remake of E.T. except instead of the alien touching the kids finger and making it glow, it bites his hand off.
Doesnt really interest me a whole lot to be honest...I just dont know why..maybe its because they have been TOO quiet about anything except the very general premise of 'something escapes'
I've never really understood the complaint that a movie doesn't know what kind of movie it's trying to be. God forbid a movie have things happening on multiple levels.
Also, when he says it could have been a great coming-of-age movie that got saddled with a story about aliens, I remember that interview with Abrams where he said he tried to pitch a straight coming of age film and the studio execs were too dense to get it.

There's nothing wrong with a movie having things happen on multiple levels. The problem he's talking about is when a film (like Super 8) has multiple thread-lines, but doesn't fully follow through with them or resolve them in a satisfying matter.
We’ve seen crashes of all shapes and sizes. The fun of it was having the kids in it. And, there are certain things that we did that I thought were fun. It was a great opportunity to just go nuts. Clearly, it goes on long and it’s one of those insane thing, but I wanted it to be like what they would remember the train crash being, as opposed to technically how the train would crash. If they were to tell the story of what the train crash was, that’s what it would look like, as opposed to being exactly that way.
OK, I'll buy that for how ridiculous the crash is but it doesn't explain at all how a pickup truck could derail a train.

This is one of the first movies I might be seeing in theaters for a while.
Looking forward to it. Maaaybe this weekend. I wonder if the AMC theaters around here are still doing the $5 movies during the week thing.
I haven't seen Cloverfield, should I see Cloverfield
I think it is a pretty good movie for what it is. Which is a POV perspective of what happens to a certain group of people when a giant monster attacks new york.
Lots of people seemed to hate that it wasn't more than that but I don't know what they were expecting.
Then again I will pretty much watch anything that has a giant monster attacking a city.

Caught a matinee showing of this today, it was pretty good. I have my nitpicks about it, there are parts that stretched suspension of disbelief and some jump scares were telegraphed from a mile away, but there's some compelling character interactions in it and I found it enjoyable overall.

e: Ah shit they're not showing it tomorrow. Might have to spring for a $8 nice theater.
I quite enjoyed the film. Very familiar to Spielberg's works, yet it had enough of Abrams in it to prevent it from feeling like a copy.
I feel like I've already seen most of it.

Only question is if it's gonna be a great one

Lucky's trailer was intriguing but also not very clear about what was happening.
I hope that's not an attempt to make a shitty movie look interesting because it could be really good!
Guess I will do that this weekend.
Yes.
I haven't seen it since theaters, but it was enjoyable. It was a very good theater movie, felt like a roller coaster ride.
I guess it would lose that on a small screen, but it is supposed to be found footage, so maybe it would be more believable in that sense?
It also has seriously the best trailer ever. At least, as far as making people want to see something that wasn't an established IP.
It's a great monster movie.
But if you dislike shaky cameras, Cloverfield would severely annoy you.
I liked it, but the overly shaky cam almost ruined it for me.
Steam
How does it stack up against Cloverfield?
Against E.T.?
Yeah the Cloverfield trailer is pretty much my favorite trailer ever.
Think of it as ET crossed with Jaws, but not as good.
Let's Play!!!
"not as good as Jaws or ET" doesn't really fill me with dread, if you know what I mean
