Knytt: Odyssey of Monkey Mouse

Knytt is a game I discovered yesterday in an old thread on the SA forums. It is an amazing platformer with a rather large world to explore. You play as a very small mouse-like creature. The only objective in the game is to collect ten doohickeys strewn throughout this place. Since you can run up and down walls, the game feels more like a maze than a traditional platformer, with more reliance on orienteering ability than manual dexterity.

The real charm of this game is in its atmosphere. The author said that he was inspired by ICO and Cave Story, and although the game is less technically advanced than either of those two, it succeeds in creating a world that has that same kind of sweeping lonely beauty. Exploring it is like an excercise in meditation. This is really helped by the amazing ambient sounds.

It is a really short game, took me about 2 hours to beat, and that was with a lot of backtracking and losing my way. I hear there are a bunch of secrets but I only found a couple. A word of caution: Although most of the little creatures you meet are benign, there are a couple that can hurt you; when you approach one of those, your character sprite will glow red to warn you. Just a heads up. Also, press END for a rudimentary map - the game doesn't tell you about this and it's really useful.

Here is the place to get the game:

Sorry if this swept through the forums before and I didn't notice. I just had such a nice time playing this game that I wanted to share it with you guys.

Played, finished and enjoyed. I'd definitely recommend this game, although to be honest it isn't quite as good as Within a Deep Forest. People who want to try it out should be aware that this game seeks to entertain not through challenging the player, but giving them a world that they can relax in and explore.

I wish he'd chosen to use full songs though, rather than short music cues; the music was part of the reason WaDF was so enjoyable...

Definitely worth playing on coffee breaks at work or something. It's quick and the music/sfx are pretty.
