This so hard. Shadow Wars isn't the most visually intense game but the gameplay is great, one of the unsung heroes of the 3DS launch that I can't suggest enough for fans of any kind of strategy.

Question: Is there a snap-on case or something for the 3DS that moves the stylus to the DS Lite's spot? Coming from the DS Lite (and being right handed), I really hate the placement of the stylus on the 3DS

I doubt it, but yeah, stylus placement on 3DS is retarded. DSi was perfect.

Actually, I like it a lot better. With the DSLite, I was always paranoid that the stylus would snag on my pants while taking it in or out of my pocket. I don't worry about that at all with the 3DS.

I never had that concern. The 3DS stylus is in the most out-of-reach spot for me and it's also so flush with the system that it's hard to get out as is.

As for Shantae, is the beginning just especially confusing? Granted, I was playing it in like, five minute bursts while it was 100° in my apartment so I wasn't paying full attention, but I have to find the puppy for the chef and there's like not even a hint of direction in the game.

Yes, I get the circle too. Be wary of Vertical smudges on your top screen that correspond to the raised edges of the touchscreen when closed. They started out as smudges and are now permanent scratches (in the screen protector thank goodness). I actually put some bigger rubber nubs in the top corners to stop the screens from rubbing against each other in my pocket.

I mean let's not kid ourselves, it's not AAA perfect game material, it's clearly a DS up-port, the story is really shallow and just an excuse for gameplay and it's unforgivingly harsh at times if you trigger an ambush and they spawn all around a lone member of your squad...

But it's still a pretty dang good game with great use of 3D for the battlefields, fun strategy gameplay, neat upgrade system and lots of content. It's one of those games that screams "launch title" but rises above that anyway.

I remember the DS had voice chat functionality, and I used it to play Pokemon with my girlfriend ages ago.

Does the 3DS have something like this on the way? It seems crucial for something like Heroes of Ruin.

It's on a per-game basis, but Heroes of Ruin specifically announced that it will have voice chat. It might even be one of the first 3DS games to do it.

It was very sparingly used in DS games, it was my understanding that it ate up a lot of processing power. That's why you could only do it between matches in Metroid Prime Hunters.

Probably just speaking right in. I don't even know if the 3DS has a microphone jack available. The old DS did and there may have even been a headset made for it, but they must've realized it wasn't widely used and decided to save a few cents per system.

BTW here's a link to confirm the voice chat for Heroes of Ruin.

Is the one you bought pretty good?

The 3DS is probably the least ergonomic gaming thing I have ever held, to be honest. I love the action of the buttons and especially the slide pad, but the whole thing feels like Nintendo just didn't care about making it comfortable to hold.

Sort of like the Dreamcast controller, which feels great for a few minutes and then my hands start to fall apart.

By "variable functionality" I mostly meant "the company screwed over early adopters by 'accidentally' shipping a crappy 'prototype' model that 'somehow made it to retail' and then pretended to 'address the issue' by telling dissatisfied customers to contact a customer service email address that never responded for a replacement that never happened."

So tl;dr - the theory behind it is more or less sound, but I can't recommend the company or their products.

So hey, can anyone here forward me some contact information for Nintendo Corporate? Because dealing with customer support just is not cutting it anymore. I just received my "Advance Replacement" 3DS, fresh from Nintendo. At first I thought everything looked great, then I noticed the bottom screen looking slightly crooked but not entirely worrisome. Then, just a few minutes ago I left mine on my desk while I went to get a drink of water, and when I got back, THIS happened:

    idoYU8.jpg

Seriously. I just got this thing in today. Haven't even taken the original one to UPS to have it shipped back to them so they can do whatever it is going to do in heaven. This will make the 4th 3DS I have gone through with Nintendo if i'm recalling correctly. The failure rate of systems I am getting from them is astronomical. I was hoping to be set for OoT this weekend, but it looks like thanks to Nintendo's inability to give me a system that is not fucked up, I cannot enjoy the game I have paid in full and been waiting for, on the system I have been dying to use and haven't because they all are fucking lemons.

Please, if someone can help me out here or give me some advice, I would greatly appreciate it. I just want to be able to use the system I blew $250 on, and I feel that I am constantly getting the shaft. I need to talk to someone at Nintendo and have them understand that this shit just cannot fly anymore.

Maaaan, that really really sucks! I wish that I had something substantial to offer in terms of advice, but the only thing I can think of is to get someone from Nintendo Support on the phone and really explain just how much you have been inconvenienced. Let them know in no uncertain terms that you want some reassurance that it won't happen again. Hopefully they can playtest the next replacement system more extensively before sending it on its way or just send you a completely new system (although that strikes me as unlikely).

Regardless, best of luck with obtaining a system in full working order. I would really try to emphasize just how dissatisfied you are though, in a restrained manner of course. At this rate I think Reggie should hand deliver the next system to you and apologize, and also give you his friend code.

I really don't want to drop $250 on one of these, particularly because of the nigh inevitable hardware refresh somewhere down the line. OoT is just forcing my hand, though. It looks so good. And then maybe they'd do Majora's Mask, which is totally a better game.

I played the demo for OoT. You're right, it looks a little bit better than the N64 version, has a better framerate and the 3D effect is decent. But... is it worth the $300 admission price? If you have a Wii you can still get the core experience for $10. Even if you don't, it's $300 for a game you've probably already played before.

I've played with the 3DS in Best Buy and it seems like having the 3D ability turned on makes me ill. With that being said, is there a reason to drop money on this when I'd be using it with 3D off 99% of the time? There are starting to be exclusives released that I'd like to play, but I'm having a real hard time with dropping $250 for this baby since it seems like I'll never be able to fully use it.

Heh, screw the Virtual Console. I'm that guy that still plays things on the original systems. My SNES gets the most love out of all of my consoles.

This is mostly a thing because my OoT cart mysteriously disappeared and with this right on the horizon, it seems like it would be far more enjoyable to do my replay with the remake than the original. Plus I could play it at work. And on the can. Something something something no I do not want green eggs and ham.

I don't use the 3D on mine because it bugs me. When it's used cleverly (like in 3D Classics Excitebike), it doesn't bother me, but I watched the OoT trailer in 3D on it yesterday and I felt cross-eyed for like two hours

    It's a great system without the 3D.

I remember a while back it was mentioned in one of the Iwata Asks that videos could only have one level of 3D (i.e. the slider works as an ON/OFF switch rather than a slider). Looking at the E3 videos on the 3DS, it seems OoT3D was done with the 3D all the way on MAX, while Paper Mario was done with the 3D just at the right level.

The biggest changes by far are in the areas that were just low-res bitmaps, for obvious reasons! They were entirely rebuilt in 3D. Other than that, preview builds/trailers indicate that Link and all NPCs and monsters have all been rebuilt from scratch, although the biggest improvments are in texture quality and faces. The environments themselves are unaltered, apart from a few high-detail areas, some stuff like vines, and individual items (e.g. chests, signs).
