Video Game Magazine

Hey all,

I'm looking for a video game magazine. I fully recognize that most, if not all, are somewhat biased. They will not get me the information before the internet. It will not be up to date.

But it will be a tangible piece of paper with artwork, screenshots, reviews, and other small things that I somewhat miss from my childhood. I used to love Nintendo Power! Then Game Informer for a while! My favorite was GMR, while it lasted, despite it being owned by EB Games. It just had a great vibe, and everything I needed for reading material while crapping, or just sitting down for five minutes.

Any suggestions? Whats the best one out there in the U.S? (EDGE would be nice, but subscription costs are substantially high)

I say GI for all it's exclusives alone.

    EGM maybe?

I'd say go back to Game Informer. I always liked them.

I like the few EDGE magazines I've ever read, but since that's out, I gotta say GI is pretty much the only other option.

I'm most certainly in the minority, but I've had a GamePro subscription since.....like 2nd grade I think. I'm 28 now. It's a little indulgence I receive every month and has become something of a tradition.

I always enjoyed PC Gamer while I subscribed, and I still read their website sometimes. The writing seems a lot better than the reviews/features I read from other game mags/sites.

On the other hand they're obviously a PC-exclusive outfit, so it may not be what you want.

I had a free GI subscription last year for.. some reason. I didn't see any problem with it. It just felt a bit redundant when I have the Internet.

Another vote for Game Informer. I just got a free subscription a few months ago, and I've immensely enjoyed the issues I've received so far. There are a lot of in depth exclusives that hit before a lot of the info ends up online. The writing is really solid for a game magazine. The reviews are decent. Best of all, it means I don't have to scour a bunch of gaming sites for relevant information when I'm curious about upcoming releases. Out of all the magazines I've skimmed in recent years its the only game magazine to hold my attention.

It seems like GI is the way to go. I had a subscription with them a while ago and liked it quite a lot. Then the format changed, and I never renewed. I'll give it a look at the bookstore and see how it holds up.

I just love looking back at my really old issues from the '90's and re-imagining all that old technology, so I want to keep that up and hold on to them for future years again. Thanks all!

EDGE is worth it. It's independent, thorough, fair and treats gaming like it's a real hobby/profession. I have been a subscribe for more than a decade now and still look forward to the next issue.

It comes in at just under $80/year for me, and with GI being $15/year, I can put up with a little less professionalism. I do like how EDGE looks, and the ones I've read look great, but that is just toooo much.

I don't see EDGE being any more "professional" than GI. I've only read a few issues, though... GI I've had for a good eight years.

Also, no one's mentioned it yet, but I've been pretty impressed with the relaunches of EGM and Gamepro. They're both really good, with Gamepro seeming to be more almost like a People Magazine of video games, with some more focus on the people behind the industry.

I had a GI subscription for years and always enjoyed it. My wife used to renew it for me for xmas every years. I need to tell her to do that again, she hasn't for a year or two.

PC Gamer was awesome back when I got it, but that was in the early to mid 90s. I still have several demo disks around here in a box. Does it still come with demos?

EGM looks interesting, and I like the idea of getting in on the ground floor of a relaunch. I'll have to see if they have any at a local bookstore or something.
