Upgrading Mem and Video Card for Supreme Commander
I want to play Supreme Commander wuth dual monitor, and was thinking about upgrading my RAM and Video Card setup.
Right now I have a an Athlon 64 4000+, on an n-force dual PCI-E mobo. a GeForce 6800 PCI-E w/256, and 1 gig of RAM. I figured I'd gig another gig and either get a second 6800 for SLI (do I need to cards to do dual monitors???) or possibly a newer card (or even 2). Money isn'y a major issue, but I'm always willing to sacrifice a little of the bang in favor of the buck.
I'll basically consider all suggestions and would appreciate the input. Thanks in advance!
Most graphics cards since the GeForce 3 or so have two monitor connectors on them. Look on your card. Does it have two DVI ports, or perhaps one DVI and one VGA? Then it supports two monitors.
However be warned that SLI only works with one monitor at a time. The other monitors just go dark during this time; they can't even display the desktop.
How well does the demo work on that computer? It seems like a pretty decent rig; is an upgrade really unnecessary? (Then again, I'm limping along with a Radeon 9700, so I've pretty much written off Supreme Commander entirely).
The demo runs ok on my rig... not bad but it could be better.
I'm thinking I can throw in another gig of RAM for pretty cheap. and I've been eyeing the 8800 series of cards. One thing I noticed on the SC forums was that SLI isn't supported, so if I get a new video card, I will just stick with one.
The thing I'm most disapointed with is the absence of 720p resolution in the game. I'd like to try hooking up my HD projecter and running in native mode. Maybe support will come in a patch later.
It doesn't support 1280x720?
Some games that don't officially support widescreen resolutions can still be forced to work with them.
Anyway, if you can't wait a month then I think the best choice would be the 320MB 8800GTS cards that came out recently. They don't always perform that great, but even in worst cases it shouldn't be slower than a X1950XT.
This one from eVGA is slightly overclocked, comes with Dark Messiah of Might and Magic and doesn't cost extra ATM.
btw. all Athlon 64 CPUs use higher memory timings when using 4 RAM sticks; I'm not certain how much impact this has, but if replacing the current 2 sticks you're probably using won't cost you much more then that would be a better choice than just adding 2 more.

Why, what is going on in a month? A new line of cards coming out forcing a price drop or something?

Thanks for the heads up on that. I was thinking about just getting 2 sticks of 1 gig and giving the old 512 sticks to a friend who really could use 'em anyway.

ATI should be releasing their DX10 cards around then, which might make nVIDIA to drop prices, but mostly it will (hopefully) provide an alternative to the IMO unimpressive 8800GTS.
Rumour has it that nVIDIA will be releasing the 8600 series cards (<$200 then also, though I'm not sure if they'll be enough for dual-monitor Supreme Commandering.
Here's some other rumour about a new revision of the 8 series but with it doesn't mention when the new cards will be released...

The new Radeons will be arriving (hard launch) this time next month, and there's a good possibility that the midrange and lowend Radeons will be out at the same time as well, so it won't just be the $400-600 cards. If that happens, you can bet Nvidia will be forced to launch their mid to low range cards ASAP, because that segment is the bread and butter of the discrete GPU market. Personally, I'm quite surprised Nvidia hasn't launched their 8600 products yet because they could've had that price range to themselves. It's possible that they're having yield problems with G80. On the other hand, if the 7xxx series is still selling well enough, considering they're old parts, yields and margins should be high and might actually be more profitable to sell than a G80 part, at least until the G80 process gets refined. Following that line of thought, it wouldn't be surprising to see Nvidia launch their mid to lowend cards the same day, or a day ahead of AMD/ATi and given four months to stockpile GPUs, have better availability as a result.
I'm actually kind of excited to see what the new Radeons will do. 1GB of GDDR4 and 700M transistors sounds fucking insane. Here's hoping the unified shader architecture work they did for the 360 pays off on the PC.

There is a command that can be entered to force 720 resolution, but some people are reporting it defaults back to 768.
