First Anniversary Ideas for Kansas/Missouri Area

Hi All,

Everyone here was a big help when I first moved to KS so I was hoping I would have some luck again.

This Sunday is our first anniversary and neither of us were that interested in just going to a restaurant or something, and I think we decided we wanted to kind of get away from the Kansas City area.

I am looking to travel maybe 2-4 hours each way at most if it can be helped, and not specifically looking for some place to stay the night. Kind of thinking more like something where we get up early Saturday or Sunday and drive to wherever and head home that night.

I was trying to check out some of the Vineyards around MO as they seem to have quite a few, but wanted to get some ideas from anyone that may have gone somewhere cool within that 2-4 hour from Kansas City window.

Main interests would include visiting a vineyard (or a few of them), checking out some cool towns, maybe just going somewhere nice that has some shops and places to eat to spend the day at. Just mainly getting away from home and pretty open to whatever. We are saving to go to Europe for next year so this year we are just keeping it simple.

Thanks for any help!

You could try Lindsborgh, KS. It is a "swedish community", but they have a lot of the flare from the old country. They strive for a different atmosphere in the downtown areas. Neat little town with good shopping and a nice pool/water park if you are in to that kind of thing. It is closer to the 3-4 hour mark from KC though. Head west on 70 and then south on 135.

My brother is a big fan of driving through the Flint Hills in KS. There is some neat smaller towns and history stuff if you drive around a bit and some people really like the countryside. I live in Salina myself and I am not too thrilled with the Flint Hills...but that may be just because I am biased as I have lived in KS my whole life.

Last weekend, Salina had their annual River Festival. That always draws in a lot of people and vendors...too bad you didn't make it for that. Sorry I am not much more help than that. If I think of something, I will pass it on.

Hermann, MO is only a few hours away and would be a good choice for wineries and stuff.
