[ASoIaF/Game of Thrones] TV Series and SPOILERED Game/Clash/Storm/Feast Discussion.
i think i'm going to read game of thrones between seasons but not move on to book two. having started off with the show, i kind of want to keep that as my primary document.
This show is so good. I might have to read the books this summer. Does it get more fantasyish from here on out? I like that there is a little but I'm going to be bummed if it gets all epic elves and dragons all over the place.

barely
very mild vague spoilers
there's a bit more magic, but that's really the biggest extent of it
In the interest of full honesty, somebody else inspired the thread title in the last thread, by making the same exact statement.
Can't remember who.
Me! Though I must admit I stole it from elsewhere on the interwebs.
"People complaining about a 1 year wait? Oh my sweet summer child. What do you know of waiting? Waiting is for the long night, when GRRM hides for years and children are born and live and die all before the next book comes out."
Yakumo Fujii on
What was she like?
"Ordinary. The kind of dangerous, beautiful ordinary that you just can't leave alone. Like an angel from the underworld or maybe a devil from paradise."
"It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation."
Yep, I had tried to read the first book ages ago but was terribly put off by GRRM's essential wordyness
This time I happened to shove the first two books in my carry on during some work trips and have been sucked in, not so much by the quality of the prose but by the fact that I frustratingly need to know what happens next
Sort of like why I read all seven books of Dark Tower
Martin's not the greatest at the prose, but he's far from the worst, especially on the sci-fi/fantasy shelves. Just pick up any book within five feet of his at the bookstore and read a random page. Some of that stuff is so bad I can't fathom how it gets published.

Oh my goodness yes
Teenage girl on the plane back from New Orleans asked me what I was reading, when I answered Game of Thrones she went "Eeewwwww" and went back to her Twilight ripoff
I'm so spoiled by guys like Stephenson and Mieville that it's scary to venture out into the wild and try to discover new sci-fi of any kind.
Like I was just telling a bud via IM, I was initially turned off of Joe Abercrombie's "First Law" books, which I read only a few months ago, because his prose is so mundane. It's not that it's bad, I'm just spoiled, as I say. And his characters and plot are so great that I finished that trilogy really quickly, with voracious interest.

Got durn kids these days
Walking through Barnes and Noble the other day, I saw a section called "New Teen Paranormal Romance."
All the bookstores I've been in have just lumped Twilight and Vampire Diaries and stuff of that nature under "Vampires"
Even one of my lady friends who likes Twilight thinks that's pretty bad (can't wait to see her face when I tell her about "Teen Paranormal Romance.") She says that at best, vampires is a sub-genre that should be filed under either cooking or lifestyle.

I have this weird thing going on with Mieville, like any time I read one of his books I spend half the time exclaiming in annoyance at one thing or another, I can probably find something irritating on every page.

MARK ALL SPOILERS BY BOOK/EPISODE, AND SPOILER ALL DETAILS, REGARDLESS OF HOW MINUTE THE SPOILERS ARE.
my mother was whining about having to wait nine whole months for more show
I just looked at her and said "the fourth book came out in 2005."
The executive producers talk about the two last episode and their thoughts on battles, dragons and direwolves in season 2
Can't remember who.
But this one is pretty good too.
Oh and 2073 days is an exact calculation. Fuck.
I think we have it WAY worse than them.

You are going to love the elves I promise
Like, I'm considering taking a vacation day off work for it.
Also, those house words are fun... House Codd--"Though All Men Do Despise Us".
Basically, "Haters gonna hate." With a dash of "They see me rollin'..."
Actually, that could be a fun game. Take the words of houses and put them in modern parlance.
House Lonmouth--"The Choice Is Yours". "We can do this the easy way, or the hard way."
House Merryweather of Longtable--"Behold Our Bounty". "I make it rain, bitches."
House Grandison of Grandview--"Rouse Me Not". With those words, and that name, how could this not be "Don't make me come over there!"

More like, "please sirs, don't fuck our butts too much".
ahhhhh
Catelyn is such an idiot
but it's ok because
And I can't help but really really like Brienne though I'm sure that'll be mixed with more pity as I get to her backstory
like Olenna and Asha

all book spoilers don't read this Usagi
Have managed to stay away from clips of the show though, want to keep that intact until I can rent/buy it and watch straight through season 1

I hate the world.
Whence already means "from where."
GRRM uses the phrase too much.

Then I buy his next book.
