I've been listening to this guy's music off and on for years now, and I find that no matter how vapid and shallow the main music industry gets, I can always count on Weird Al for some good entertainment.
Known primarily for his parodies of various famous songs, my favorites included these...

The best. The video is also hilarious, but the song can stand on it's own legs.

The guy has some pretty fun originals, too.

We always sang this song in its entirety on the way back from band trips.

I was a much bigger fan of his on the 80s, but I am happy he's been able to keep himself relevant. I remember having a cassette tape of [strike]Fat[/strike] Even Worse and maybe one or two of his other albums.

In 1991 or so I'd go on to buy my first-ever CD which happened to be Weird Al's Off the Deep End which, oddly enough, helped get me into grunge, then heavy metal. 20 years later, I still have that CD (and a little over a thousand others).

edit: "Good Old Days" is a favorite of mine, just because of how twisted it was to my young brain.

Actually, I really like his polkas a lot. They really underscore how vapid and ridiculous some pop music's lyrics are.

Apparently once before a show he got a call letting him know that both his parents had just been found dead from Carbon Monoxide. Al went ahead and DID THE SHOW ANYWAY.

    That's some hardcore showmanship.

As much as his parodies are great, his polka cover medleys and original songs are my favorites.
Also maybe it's just because of when I started listening to him, but I think his stuff from the 90s onward is as good or better than his 80s stuff. Just personal preference, of course.

Man, I love Weird Al. I've been listening to his stuff since I was a kid, it's amazing that he's still as relevant as he is.

Though the latest album doesn't really have as many good songs as the last few, but I guess that's more the fault of modern pop music than Al himself. The originals are still really good (particularly CNR).

Weird Al is awesome. I think whats good about him is that he obviously takes a good amount of time to make his parody songs as accurate as possible to the melody of the original song. The result is that some of his parody songs are so brilliant that when you listen to the original its not nearly as good :P

Examples as Amish Paradise and Soon I'm Gonna Be A Jedi.

I've always loved Weird Al's music, from the early days of Fat (had the cassette!) to the Alapalooza tour (saw him twice in concert) and beyond.

    Personal favourites:

    All About the Pentiums:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpMvS1Q1sos

    Gump:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQwWaWFjd0Y

    Jurassic Park
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gh4zvQfDhi0

And piles of others, including the Star Wars musical saga and his polka medleys.

His style of humour helped me get through some rough times, and for that I'll always be greatful.

I miss the days when he used to 'take over' Much Music and play a mix of his videos, regular videos with sound effects added over them/commentary, and spliced "interviews" with celebrities.

Hell, there are some of his parodies that I know so well I can't help but think of/sing them over the regular words if I hear the original song while out and about.

Eh I don't know that I'd disagree because History of the World Part I/Blazing Saddles/Robin Hood: Men in Tights/Spaceballs/etc are all brilliant comedies but so is UHF.

Really I just file them all as "Really good. Really really good. No seriously that good" and call it a day :P

And holy crap I just reminded myself that Dave Chapelle was in Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

Well thank you thread, you called attention to the fact that Al has a new album out just as of this week. I may have to take a trip and pick it up.

Off the Deep End was the first album of his I owned, though I was vaguely familiar with music videos of Fat before that. He definitely has a lot of great songs and I've always loved the polkas.

I'm a huge fan of Al, ever since I was a kid I used to stay up late Sunday nights and listen to Doctor Demento live on the local LA station. Sadly, the Dr's show is extinct, which is a huge loss. :(

I live in the Antelope Valley and the past few years Al has been doing the free concert at the Antelope Valley fair. It's a great show, packs the stadium, and pretty much covers every demographic.

This is my fav song/video from the new album. I could tell you why, but then I'd have to kill you...

I remember Dr. Demento, I would record that show (on cassette) to listen to during the week.

I forget that Weird Al is still alive. But when he has a new album it brings a smile to my face. I can't think who I listed to back form the 80's has put out a new record other then Al. That's some staying power there.

So let me just leave this right here because I enjoy it so much.
