Okay so I spawned. Still not quite sure where I am, or exactly where I'm supposed to be going.
My character does say things on his own some times, in very jerky russian. I'm all "ВРАГ казармы замечена на 1-5-1А, 1 интересным." Not sure if anyone else can hear what I'm saying.
I did figure out the chat and team speak buttons though! Key binding is a bit of a mess since you can't seem to go to the conflict.
There seem to be a bunch of other noobs on my team, since we're all sitting in the spawning area trying to figure out what's supposed to be going on.
Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.

I heard people talking on it, but they seemed to be talking to each other and not me.
your character also seems to auto-speak sometimes to identify things or acknowledge commands, but I'm not quite sure how that works

Considering it looks like all the hoo-ah semper fudge military neckbeards use mods and you can't use mods if you use f2p then I don't think it matters to them.
i just want to say that this is entirely the truth
nobody who plays arma 2 seriously is playing vanilla
Me, Erics, and some friends have been playing on and off for a pretty good while now and I don't think we have ever done vanilla multiplayer
Do you know about the different chat levels? You can switch between talking globally, talking to your side, talking to your commander, and talking to your squad, and probably one other thing I forgot. The chat color changes depending on what mode you're using, and it also determines who hears your mic.

the one other thing is vehicle chat
you can talk to just whoever's in your car/helicopter/tank/etc

Rolo did you just completely ignore my post where I explained some things about the game or what.
I even said how to chat and use chat channels.
Two things to add:
- [V] lets you do a little hop, that is good for getting over low walls/fences
- To open gates/doors that can be opened, you look at them until a symbol with arrows shows up, then press middle mouse button. Usually, the context menu can open them as well.

Yeah, this fence/base thing was too high for V to work, I just kind of humped against the side and the gate/door thing didn't respond to "open door", it seemed like it was just stuck in place. Is there a way to scale or climb over objects? I don't remember doing that in campaign mode.
I was able to get some of that chat options working! Just not in whatever vent/teamspeak configuration that was in use on that server.
I mean, seriously Rolo, have you ever considered starting up a site where you liveblog whilst playing games. You're witty enough to have it actually be entertaining.

I don't really have the time for a lot of gaming anymore, or running a site dedicated to it.

Not in vanilla ArmA2 there isn't, sadly. If it wasn't responding to open door then yeah, it was probably stuck. Sometimes you need to open the doors from specific spots, it can get a little wonky at times.

Yeah, some things I don't quite get yet:
An easy way to tell what/where the team objective is, or see who my squad mates are. The map sometimes has a basic objective on it, but doesn't really go into detail other than that.
How to figure out who's being referred to when I do get orders, or really identify who's giving those orders- "ENGAGE THAT SOLDIER" (which soldier?).
Knowing anything about command structure - it seems like there's no one really coordinating what's going on with the servers that I'm playing on. That could be because they're public vanilla servers so everyone just does their own thing, or it could be that I'm not looking in the right place for tactical information.

The map holds all the information you need. It should show where friendlies are, where the current objective is, etc. It also has information at the top you can click on to see current objective things. Some of this may not be there if it is a shitty mission someone made though.
If you are actually part of a squad, your other squad members will be listed in the lower left with numbers next to their names. Generally you have onscreen information too, highlighting your squad mates. This information may also not be there though depending on the server, or you may also not even be in a squad.

That is always a good thing to do in games.
There's a low gate here keeping us all corralled inside. Nobody seems to know how to open it.
One guy is on the ground and is just rolling around. Another guy is standing up, then sitting down, then standing up.
There's a guy on teamspeak who is swearing about why can't the helicopter come here to pick us up.
One guy keeps on spawning and killing himself with the RPG.

Man, you don't have to do that shit every day. Just when you can. For funsies.
Just sayin'.
it is prompting me for one i don't have
I actually purchased the game on Steam a while back, not quite sure how the free version handles this.
