In the news post for June 10, 2011, Tycho tells us how he and Kiko have roped Gabe and Kara into playing League of Legends. A free-to-play multiplayer game based on the old Defense of the Ancients (DOTA) mod for Warcraft III.
I don't think the joke is about how badly they lost. I think it's about how despicable the other players are. Seriously, the language of most players is vile.

...which is only brought out when people suck.
Heh. That is the hingepoint of MOBA's, I think. It isn't brought out when people suck; it's brought out when there is a perception of sucking. A team losing will always start projecting the suckitude on the player who has had the worst performance, even if that player doesn't objectively suck. One team has to lose, one has to win. Invariably, the losing team will blame their loss on one team being a ***** ***** **** ***** asswipe, rather than on the fact that they did reasonably well, but the team got outplayed.

I've played LoL since early beta and spent plenty of time with DoTA as well. It's so amazingly exaggerated.

In panel 2 of today's comic we see the group of players, now including Brian, venture into a game against human opponents instead of bots.
The League of Legends community is known to be particularly vocal and creative with their insults.
Our heroes decide they are better off with the bots.
End scene.
