Just a reference to a thing that is pretty common to lots of people, but makes the viewer/reader feel like "Oh man, this is just for me! This is a thing that speaks to me!"

Oh believe me, once I realized that the new run of Family Guy was doing almost exclusively that for their "jokes" and I realized that it was pretty lame and boring, I got to thinking that "Oh shit, I do that a lot of the time here." Since then I've made a concentrated effort to try to not make a reference just for the sake of making a reference. I know I still do it, but I'm quite certain I do it a lot less than I used to. So basically, Family Guy being terrible has helped me to be a better forumer.
Although, while the FF characters have taken a strange turn in the last decade, I'm much more annoyed by Street Fighter 4. Does EVERYONE have to be a muscle-bound freak? Ryu and Ken at the very least should be somewhat slender.
