HL2 on the Xbox: $5 at Circuit City

So Half Life 2 for the Xbox is on sale for $4.99 at Circuit City right now. The games themselves are stickered at $9.99, but the separater in the game rack lists it at $4.99, they just didn't sticker each individual game. I got ahold of a copy yesterday and have been playing a shit load of it since then. I haven't played the PC version, but from what I understand other than a lack of multiplayer, downgraded graphics (which are still very, very impressive by Xbox standards), and the occasional framerate stutter it's the exact same game.

So, if you're into shooters, you've got an Xbox, but you haven't played HL2 yet, you now don't seem to have anhy excuses not to check the game out. It's awesome.
Right now I just saved Barney from the snipers after Alyx and I took our week long "slow teleporter" trip. I've put around fourteen hours into the game since I've gotten it, and from what I understand, I still have a decent amount of game to go through before the end.

So, Half Life 2 for the Xbox is only five bucks and you should go get it. Discuss.

Edit: Spoilers do in fact work now. And grammar.

    Spoilers do work:
    See?

And yes HL2 is awesome. After you finish, watch the speedrun for additional entertainment.

I have a hard enough time hitting those uber-head-crab-screaming-running-fucker guys with the mouse. How do you manage with a gamepad?

The headcrabs don't give me too much trouble (except for those poison fuckers), but driving the vehicles with the pad does really suck. The left stick is used for movement, Goldeneye style, while the right stick aims the vehicle's weapon. I can't really think of a way that they could have made controlling both the vehicle and the weapon at the same time on a gamepad not suck, though.

The screaming dudes are a pain in the ass sometimes, but they have a soft spot in their heads for a double load of buckshot. This way you also take out the headcrab, so it doesn't jump at you from the ground, which surprised the shit out of me the first time I killed a zombie with torso hits and thought it was actually dead.

How the shit have you sunk 14 hours into this? It shouldn't take anymre than 8, and that's on the long end.

Also, in 14 hours, it's entirely possible to beat Halflife 1, Opposing Force, Blue Shift, Half-life 2, and Episode 1. And that's without rushing.

Not trying to be rude, but I honestly don't believe that there is 14 hours of gameplay in the game in one playthrough unless you're getting stuck every ten minutes.

I beat HL2 Xbox over the course of a week. Which was probably about 30 hours or so of playing.

I rented it. I think it's very worth the 5$, because it just works. The only thing missing (and mentioned with the driving controls) is that they only have Halo's "default" sticks setup, and no Legacy control-stick-scheme (strafe/look on right stick, move/turn on the left), which made the game slightly harder for me.

Plus I <3 the new weapon selection with the DPAD. That is some hot stuff.

For those wondering how it fares graphically, the level detail is mostly there (except in 640x480), non-major characters are on the equivalent of the PC version's "low" detail, but major characters like Alyx seem to be in full detail. The sound effects I also assume carry over (the cool "distant" sound of gunfire/explosions)

i actually took about 16 hours to complete HL2, and i wasn't exactly dawdling (this was maybe my 3rd playthrough, and did it in a single sitting). Different people just take different amounts of time.
also, i'll likely get the HL2 pack for the 360, as long as it's playable. It'll be a good reason to play through it again.

Yeah. The whole thing controls pretty damn well. I actually thought the vehicle control was better.

hey, if anyone can get a spare copy of this, I would happily pay cost + p&p to the UK. $5 is ridiculously cheap, and would give me my HL2 fix till I get my new PC.

Well, I may have mispoke about the length the games are. But I remember HL1 taking me anywhere from 6-8 hours, same goes for HL2. While Opposing Force was maybe 4 hours, Blue Shift took less than 2 hours, and HL2 Episode one took 4.

Yeah, I thought it was a lot more fun to drive with the stick than with WASD. It felt like actually driving a car.

HL2 Ep1 took me 4 hours but HL2 took me 13 hours. 6 hours for the first playthrough of HL2 seems insanely low.

I've been spending a lot of time exploring, and have found a bunch of really cool shit. Also, some of the secret caches hidden around the city by the human resistance are in some off the wall places. And it's always fun spotting the G-Man in some weird off the wall location.

LewieP did anyone offer to pick you up a copy?

Having played both, I actually preferred the gamepad to the keyboard for this game sometimes. It really made a big difference in the platforming and vehicle parts of the game.

Aside from the vehicles, I can't imagine controlling this with a controller. It just seems like a sin to me, especially for Half Life.

Well it's a good thing HL2 isn't twitch at all. You never have to be precise at any point.

I never had a problem with those two guns.

Then again, I never really had much of a reason to take them out unless I ran out of ammo for the other guns.

It's impossible for me to play any FPS on a console after playing it on a PC. It's WAY easier for aiming, IMO. Especially with HL2, for the first half of the game, the 9mm was my sniper rife. Three pops to the head from behind cover will deal with Combine like nobody's business.

My friends always made fun of me for sucking at Halo, considering how much time I spend on my computer. Then they see me on a PC, especially with HL2, dancing around squads of Combine unloading shot into them without getting hit.

Is it just personal preference, or does everyone consider it easier on PC?

Is this upscaled on the 360, or is it just 480p?

360's going to get an actual 360 version of HL2 sometime this year though

I guess the 360 version is going to have HL2, Episode 1 and 2, a consolified version of Team Fortress 2, and Portal, along with multiplayer.

My roomate has a 360, so I would buy it posthaste if it released with Half Life Source as well. I can't seem to find a copy of the PS2 version, so the only console HL I can play is the Dreamcast version (which comes with a few downsides, but does include Blue Shift). It would be nice to have an upconverted version of the original HL running on the 360.

I don't really play any of the HL games multiplayer (except for Decay on the PS2, because it's co-op and awesome), so the only reason I would have left for buying Orange Box would be for Episodes 1 and 2, and I don't think that they are worth $60. I'm not terribly excited about Portal.

Microsoft and Valve need to figure out some way of either getting the old HL games up and running on the 360 and on the Live Marketplace, or finding someway for Steam to connect to Live, because being able to play the legacy HL and it's mods on the 360 would be pretty damn awesome.

Well, they -did- port Counterstrike to the Xbox (although i'm not sure if it's a port of Half Life's engine or just a port of Counterstrike with a new engine). I think they could port Half Life 1 to 360 if they really wanted to. Possibly as a Arcade download.

That is fucking lame, considering the Dreamcast version's models were upgraded from the original PC models, and the PS2's models were upgraded from the high definition pack.

Didn't a group of people release a PC-compatible package of the upgraded PS2 character/weapon models?

There is a mod, but it screwed up the graphics for me. *shrug*
