Sinclair Lewis [chat]

Harry Sinclair Lewis (February 7, 1885 – January 10, 1951) was an American novelist, short-story writer, and playwright. In 1930, he became the first writer from the United States to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, "for his vigorous and graphic art of description and his ability to create, with wit and humor, new types of characters." His works are known for their insightful and critical views of American society and capitalist values, as well as for their strong characterizations of modern working women.
He has been honored by the U.S. Postal Service with a Great Americans series postage stamp.
...
Upon moving to Washington, D.C., Lewis devoted himself to writing. As early as 1916, he began taking notes for a realistic novel about small-town life. Work on that novel continued through mid-1920, when he completed Main Street, which was published on October 23, 1920.[4] As his biographer Mark Schorer wrote, the phenomenal success of Main Street "was the most sensational event in twentieth-century American publishing history."[5] Based on sales of his prior books, Lewis's most optimistic projection was a sale of 25,000 copies. In the first six months of 1921, Main Street sold 180,000 copies, and within a few years, sales were estimated at two million.[6] According to Richard Lingeman, "Main Street earned Sinclair Lewis about three million current [2002] dollars".[citation needed]
Lewis followed up this first great success with Babbitt (1922), a novel that satirized the American commercial culture and boosterism. The story was set in the fictional Midwestern town of Zenith, Winnemac, a setting to which Lewis would return in future novels, including Gideon Planish and Dodsworth.
Lewis continued his success in the 1920s with Arrowsmith (1925), a novel about the challenges faced by an idealistic doctor. It was awarded the Pulitzer Prize (which Lewis refused). Adapted as a 1931 Hollywood film directed by John Ford and starring Ronald Colman, it was nominated for four Academy Awards.
Next Lewis published Elmer Gantry (1927), which depicted an evangelical minister as deeply hypocritical. The novel was denounced by many religious leaders and banned in some U.S. cities. Adapted for the screen more than a generation later, the novel was the basis of the 1960 movie starring Burt Lancaster, who earned a Best Actor Oscar for his performance.
Lewis closed out the decade with Dodsworth (1929), a novel about the most affluent and successful members of American society. He portrayed them as leading essentially pointless lives in spite of great wealth and advantages. The book was adapted for the Broadway stage in 1934 by Sidney Howard, who also wrote the screenplay for the 1936 film version. Directed by William Wyler and a great success at the time, the film is still highly regarded. In 1990, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, and in 2005 Time magazine named it one of the "100 Best Movies" of the past 80 years.
feral do you mean 500 below the amount needed to maintain current weight or only taking in 500 calories a day
I know if you maintain a calorie deficit for too long, it stops working, so you have to do a periodic refeed (but this is more controversial and poorly defined).
Arch: I love sirtuins but I didn't know they played a role in weight-loss. I've been studying them for their neuroprotective properties and their inherent function as histone deacetylase inhibitors.
Alpha Protocole not really spoilers (mechanics mostly)
Man, chainshot and stealth really are just incredibly overpowered, unreasonably so.
But anyway, for most of my missions I always seem to end up killing everyone on my way to the goal (mostly stealithly but eh). Is this going to end up biting me in the ass at any point?
yes, yes it is.
there are some missions where killing people is a bad thing. save your tranq darts for those
other than that most missions are really just "kill everyone on you way to X" although there can be some benefits if you don't
UCI: Thor Hushovd and Mark Cavendish are disqualified from the Stage 3 intermediate sprint following their incident.
Collectively, the media, the teams, and the audience: Incident?
UCI: No rider shall deviate from their selected line after launching into their sprint [cites regulation]
Cavendish: I'd really love to know what I should have done there. Barrier to my left, rider moving in from the right. I move left, I crash, I brake, I crash, I try to fend off with a hand instead of my shoulder, I crash.
Hushovd: My bad, I will accept full responsibility.
UCI: Nope, both still DQ'd.

All three of those books are fantastic, btw. I wrote a long thesis about Lewis and some other American modernists years ago.
So, my problem with New Vegas is just that I am p bad at it.
I just got to the mission where I need to clear the Nightkin from the basement. I like the Ghouls so I don't want to bargain. I want to kill them. But I just can't. I managed to kill the leader, and once the jailer, but every time I try and kill a regular one, I am destroyed immediately. I ran into this problem with the Powderganger prison too, and am now wondering if these are quests that I'm supposed to come back to?

most sbarro is bad. Though, every once in a while one of the locations is really fucking good. Maybe I'm just remembering something from many years ago and I was just hungry then.
The one in the mall I used to work was heaven
the chef (and he was a chef) was fucking excellent. Like he'd make the best pizzas and he'd do special orders and shit.
But then he got a proper job at a real restaurant and it was shit afterwards
Slow down. Not Guilty on First Degree Murder. Which isn't shocking. There really isn't a case that she murdered the kid. Let's see how the other charges play out.
Edit: Not guilty of child abuse or manslaughter.
Welp!
I wonder if they get her on the obstruction of justice charges.

followers help a bunch with most quests
NV is much less a one-man-army kind of game than fo3 was
then again, it's plausible that you're way under leveled for the quest. explore a bit and do some sidequests.
Countercounterpoint: Sbarros is mediocre pizza and if you're going to spend your caloric 'budget' on pizza, spend it on better pizza.
Some of us live in areas where the locals can't grasp the concept of good pizza. I live in an area where the natives consider a thin crust to be a cracker with tomato sauce and some crappy cheese. At one point I found a place that made a good greek style pizza, decent cheese, decent crust, good sauce. But they moved way the fuck away. So in a land of awful pizza, a mediocre pizza is king.

The sad state of affairs is that in my area of Santa Monica, you're better off throwing a frozen pizza in the oven than paying the exorbitant cost of a terribly made pizza.

So in Fo3 I've gotten to the point where I have 10 agi and 10 perception with 8 luck maxed out energy weapons full ranger armor and the androids plasma rifle.

The game will make it mostly blindingly obvious to you if you start offing the kind of dudes that makes one of your handlers upset, and it'll point it out to you before you begin the mission too.
It's rare to end a mission and receive a chewing out for slaughtering your way through a bunch of guys it turns out a certain NPC was bffs with without there being major signposts towards that outcome

So...I'm going to start making my opus in XNA. An RPG. It's going to be so awesome that the world will cry when they see me. Just like now, but these will be tears of happiness instead of tears of fright and terror.
Drez! I'm working on my own RPG using the RPG maker XP/VX software. We can be rpg buddies.
What's "RPG maker XP/VX"? I was thinking of just building my own engine from scratch, but I dunno. What do you recommend?
It's just a building block engine. It's got all of the stuff for a good old snes type rpg with some ability for custom code if you want to go 3d rather than sprite. It's for making PC games though so I doubt it works with XNA. It's just a nice cheap program. You can make your own sprites and music and import them in and make some cool stuff.
So basically I want a turn-based combat and movement engine, but I want movement to occur first-person like Might and Magic/Etrian Odyssey/Wizardry/etc.

What kind of build/gear are you playing with?
I'm attempting to be a gunslinger. Pistols/rifles. I wear a cowboy hat and I promote individual rights. I have been distributing points mostly between sneak, lockpick, guns and whatever ability helps me repair things and use workbenches.

I miss the food at Tech
a wrap, a bowl of chicken noodle, a bowl of mac and cheese, a hot dog, a burger, a cuban...
From his description of it, it sounded like a better idea.

Little girl drowned in the pool. Mother wrapped body up and hid it in the woods. Nancy Grace made a spectacle of it for the past seven months.
