I'm a New Yorker who's moved to the south, and everyone down here loves to pull the "lol I'm a redneck" gag. Northern Virginia isn't even the real south!

The Army of Northern Virginia is the most famous confederate army, though. Conundrum.

Just more evidence of the brutal and, quite frankly embarrassing, victory of the North over those Southern belles with their 'rebellion.' I mean it wasn't even really a fair fight. We just slapped you guys silly until you cried uncle sam. It was kind of sad, really.

I didn't realize quite how much I'd learnt about swordplay until I tried to get my old fencing partner up to speed after her long absence from practice. It's like, geeze, isn't obvious that if you take a slight girata while attempting to close the line in 4th that you'll need a much smaller motion in case you need to close the line again in 2nd after a disengage? Geeeze.

So I just took a twenty minute bath and came up with a loose idea for a story. I then let the water drain out and sat in the tub refining it for about ten minutes. Then I got up, put food away, and started writing an outline for it. Then I elaborated on the outline. Then I refined the idea a bit more.

I now have an idea for a story I am excited to write. The actual premise and plot is fucking dark and I'm not sure how I feel about having come up with an idea like this.

If you like Aaron Sorkin, and if you are into politics, it is pretty amazing.

The West Wing and The Wire are probably my two favorite TV shows, and picking between the two would be difficult.

I've paid $0 so far for fencing lessons, and they've been letting me use the loaner gear for a year now (I plan to fix that soon though).

Olympic fencing is a sport, it has little resemblance to actual historical sword fighting. This isn't a knock against olympic fencing, its not trying to be a historical simulator or anything of the sort. You use very light, super flexible blades and electronic vests that detect when you are hit, no matter how light. Speed and reach is paramount.

The SCA is a larger organization, but, SCA fencing in particular aims to try to recreate fencing more historically, while still keeping it safe and fun for the participants. Its not a sport, but its a physical activity. The swords look like, well, swords from historical manuals, or movies. The blades are stout, stiffer, they can't be whipped like olympic weapons can. Circular movement is allowed, you don't fence on a strip. Off hand weapons are allowed, like daggers (as they were employed in the off hand historically). Technique is based (sometimes loosely, sometimes directly) off of historical fencing manuals that have been studied and translated. The SCA is a non-profit organization, lessons are free, and loaner gear is also generally available for no cost.

I liked the Goofy Green Hornet movie. Here's an imdb trivia blurb:

"29 copies of the Black Beauty were made from scrounged 1964, 1965, and 1966 Chrysler Imperials, many of which were rusted out and had to be rebuilt. Only three survived production intact."

I'm really hoping that means it's like Dr. Strangelove or: How I learned to stop worrying and love Swan Lake.

Also, re: fencing, keep your eyes open for local non-private classes or clubs. The community center where I grew up had a fencing club and there were a couple really great older gents who taught classes for all the less advanced people. You just had to pay like, the seasonal club dues of like, $45 or so every 6 months and then get gear, which the instructor dude sold lightly used stuff for like, $100 for a suit, foil, mask, and bag.
