Best way to catch a lame duck? Transport?

Hey everyone -

We live in a lake town, and occasionally feed the ducks and geese at the lake. Over the past two weeks we've seen a duck with an obviously lame wing, and we've been feeding him whenever we see him. We contacted a registered wildlife rehab center which will take him - but we have to catch him.

I need a plan.

The duck is a mallard, and it is his right wing that is lame. The wing appears to bother him enough that he will not enter the water or attempt to fly. Any time we have gotten close to him or the occasional pack of ducks he hangs with he always stops at the water line. We have purposely tried to avoid stressing him out because I suspect we're going to get one chance at this swoop n' scoop.

Assuming we can snag Howard (heh - wifey's so young she doesn't get the reference) we have an hour and a half drive to the animal rehab center. Any suggestions on transport? This is a full grown mallard and doesn't look like it would fit comfortably in even the biggest cat carrier we've got.

Operation Duck Repossession goes down at 10am friday so I could use some advice beforehand. Thanks!

I'm surprised the rehab center didn't tell you what to do. Luck for you, I'm close with people who work in a rehab center!
You will want to throw a towel over the bird, and then you can pick it up. You can then put him in a large enough cardboard box with the towel still over him. When a birds head is covered, it calms down immediately, thus the towel. Don't worry about feeding it, but do secure the box in your car somehow so that its not bouncing around.

I just want to say goodluck. I love the duck's name. Poor little guy trapped in a world he didn't make.

Thanks - Wifey and I are headed out now to see if we can round him up. I'll see if we can get a picture. :)
