The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Rise of Immortals is currently in closed beta and is an action real-time strategy game being developed by Petroglyph Games for Microsoft Windows. It features the popular action-strategy gameplay of traditional DotA games, but adds enhanced socialization features, along with persistent character progression. Instead of an account-based leveling system, players can advance their Immortals through a diverse, persistent skill tree, customizing and upgrading the characters to unlock unique abilities that persist from match to match.
In addition, Rise of Immortals features a social hub where players can show off their enhanced Immortals, chat, emote, browse leaderboards, shop, manage friend and guild lists and more. Players also have the option of taking their Immortals through cooperative Player versus Environment (PvE) scenarios to learn the game, try out new abilities and earn persistent experience before jumping into Player versus Player (PvP) matches online.
Is "DotA game" a genre, now? We just had a comic on League of Legends last week, too.
Pokeball on a stick. That's one way to do a staff of summoning I suppose.
I hate that the internet has broken my mind to the point where I can't tell if you're joking or not.
On the offchance that you're not joking, that's a fishing float.
In the much more likely event that you're joking in an attempt to have someone make the above post, I guess I fell for it hook, line and sinker. (Those are other fishing things that I know about. My knowledge of fishing ends there though.)
"What is Rise of Immortals?" I pondered. So I checked.
Is "DotA game" a genre, now? We just had a comic on League of Legends last week, too.
DotA games (called "MOBAs" because why not have a bizarre four word acronym as your genre name) have been a genre for some time - primarily they were just map mods in games like Warcraft 3 or Starcraft, though. The release of Demigod in 2009 was the first standalone MOBA, but it wasn't until Heroes of Newerth and League of Legends that the stand-alone MOBA really found success. With the reception the F2P LoL has received, games such as Rise of Immortals are likely to become more popular, just as games like Runes of Magic or Allods Online owe a great deal to WoW's success.

I looked up some of the characters designs when Gabe tweeted about how bad they were.
There were bad.
I imagine the Art Director (or whoever was in charge of things) called up someone they knew in high school who used to draw some and said "Make this character look like that guy/girl from that other game - yeah, just like that!"

Unless they heavily changed everything in that game from the closed beta on, the game itself, not a single fucking exaggeration, is even more horrible than the art direction. It's like Petroglyph thought putting a korean MMO and LoL into a blender and releasing the result was a good idea, and didn't realise the result was half of a kitten.

Professor Necro-Dead is a dead necromancer. Who necromanced him (animated him after death)? Was he a necromancer before he died? Did he necromance himself? Did he learn all he knows about necromancy from the necromancer who animated him? I want to know more about this guy.

Professor Necro-Dead (then Clarence Fairweather) applied to and was granted entrance at the Universitus Arcanum, where he studied and attained his BAA (Bachelor's in the Arcane Arts) in Necromancy. He was always a good student, but wanted more from his education than a simple Bachelor's degree would grant him. He was not to go out and get a job in the Necromancy workforce! He was destined for greater things.
He then applied to the graduate studies program at UA, where he pursued a Masters Degree in Mancy-ology. Working as a teacher's aid at the time in order to pay his own tuition, he spent most of his time fraternizing with the faculty and staff of UA and learning wherever he could. He eventually entered the doctorate program there in Posthumous Necromancy, with a multi-cultural emphasis on Undead Studies and Culture. For his thesis he performed the dark ritual which would turn him into a dead necromancer, consuming five of his classmates in the process, and in doing so, successfully completed his doctoral defense.
Since then he has been teaching at the Universitus as an adjunct professor while scouring the world for those who require knowledge of Dead Necromancy. Next semester Professor Necro-Dead will be teaching NEC503 - Phylactery Materials and Construction, NEC510 - Advanced Spirit Summoning, and AA340 - Intermediate Mancy-ology.

He was a quiet and retiring professor in Necromantic Studies at a small liberal arts college. He didn't actually put any of his dark knowledge into practice until the day of his death when, overcome by a sudden horror of the grave, he used a ritual from an old conference paper to presurrect himself, ensuring his continuing existence after his imminent demise.
After his death and subsequent rebirth as an abomination against God and nature, he took up practical necromancy on a full-time basis, reasoning "Well, screw it."
