USB ports stopped working

a few days ago i plugged in an old usb drive into my laptop, and since then all of my usb ports have been acting weird. i ran some virus checks, but the computer is clean. at first the ports would recognize any other drives i plugged in, but only for a couple of minutes. now though they don't even show up. the weird thing is that all of the ports still transfer power as far as i know. my cooler, mouse receiver and charger are all working. they just don't seem to want to transfer data. anyone know how i can fix this?
