Through a stroke of luck I won a copy of the evangelion 2.22 collectors blu ray.
I see it's getting awesome reviews on amazon etc, however to really enjoy this do I need to have any prior knowledge from the first movie or the series in general?

It's a series about anime dudes in big robots duking it out. You'll be fine.

You'll want to see the first movie, yeah. Seeing the original series (with End of Evangelion instead of episodes 25 and 26) would be even better, but I'm not sure it'd be necessary.

Ya I was completely lost regarding the characters/story in the movie. I definitely believe you need to look into prior Evangelion stuff before really enjoying this movie ... if its worth your time even.

Definitely pick up 1.11, as its basically the first "third" of the broadcast series. 2.22 is the second "third" and presumably there will be a 3.33. I say its in thirds, but its probably closer to like...40% of the series each.

You can watch them without any prior knowledge of the series, in fact I suggest it. The original series is so wildly different at this point it's almost beyond mattering. The re-mastered (is that the correct term here?) films make so much more sense and are 100% more coherent. Not that the originals weren't fun haha.

You need to watch the first movie. You don't need to watch the series. The first Rebuild movie is basically a retelling of part of the series, but starting with the second movie things change a lot.

There are going to be four movies.

Four? I wasn't even sure what they were going to put into the third one! At least it'll be different, I'm sure!

As someone who watched the entirety of Evangelion in the past week:

2.22 is great, but you should definitely watch 1.11 beforehand, as they're essentially the second and first parts, respectively, of a tetralogy that hasn't been completed yet. If you really like what you see, I'd highly recommend watching the original series, along with the End of Evangelion movie.

As a counter to Skeith, I think it's worth watching episodes 25 and 26 in addition to the End of Evangelion. But again, only if you enjoy the rebuild! It's a good place to start.

You can enjoy the two movies perfectly fine without having watched any of the original series at all, but you will be able to appreciate certain differences and changes in the movies if you do watch it.

But of course that might not really be that important to you enjoying the movies so don't stress about it!

Also just because no-one else said it, the dub is still one of the better dubs out there (the movies are most certainly better than the original series, too), so don't feel any shame in watching it if you want to!

I rather enjoyed the original series when it was shown here years and years ago. Now you've got me thinking I should look into these reboots, if they're as good as you all say they are...

    It's very worth it.

(I can probably lend you the blu-rays :3)

You're definitely going to want to pick up the first movie. What you're asking is, essentially, 'hey, I just got the second Lord of the Rings movie, do I need to see the first one before getting into this one?'

No, you don't _have_ to pick up the first one, but there's a whole lot of stuff going on and it's going to be a much more satisfying movie, as well as making a lot more sense if you watch the first part of the story too.

I thoroughly enjoyed the TV series as well, but that's something you can pursue if you finish the movies with a series jonsing for more Evangelion. You don't need it to prep you for the movies.

I greatly enjoyed the original series as well. There were some slow points that I wouldn't mind them trimming away, which apparently the 4 movies do in a fashion (as well as adding a character and whatnot), but I've yet to snag them personally.

I've been wavering on Amazon'ing them for a while, but they remain just out of impulse buy range. And the Evangelion Platinum box set needs to hit a reasonable price point some day.

    $90 new when it's available on Amazon.com for $60 isn't particularly reasonable.

You say that as if the last two episodes were bad.

Def. check out the original series of Evangelion. Some things are more fleshed out in the original series that are just skimmed thru in the new movies. Even though they are kinda two completely different movies, I still feel it's important to watch the new movies after you watch the original. I personally like the original better than the new series, but maybe that's because the original is just what i'm use to.

The original series has a lot of character moments that you just won't get in the movies because of time constraints, but I think the movies do a great job with adding little new things (such as Rei's cooking in 2.22) while still managing to get across what you need to know (basically, everyone has some sort of parental/family issue, and the series gets into that a little more).

There are some truly great episodes of the series, and I would suggest that eventually you do see it, but 1.11 sets everything up nicely and 2.22 deviates enough from the series that you don't need to really know anything about it, at all. Mari Illustrious Makinami, for example, looks like she will be a major character going forward and she is not even in the series.
