Hard Drive Sounds?

Is there any relationship between how loud a hard drive is and its' reliability? My hard drive was always pretty quiet (Seagate 120gig), however now you can hear it spinning up pretty loudly periodically during the day. I'm still covered under the 11 year warranty Seagate has, but I just wanted to know if this is something I should be concerned about.

I know clicking is bad and is basically the read/write heads banging against the platters, and when the ball bearings on fans start to wear out they get louder, so maybe the drive's bearings are producing that noise (or the fan that's often in front of hard drives might be the source?).

And I don't think even server drives get 11 years of warranty.

You may want to check your Seagate warranty, son. That's exactly what my latest documentation says. Thanks for the info though, I'll switch my hard drives out then.

How Long Does The Coverage Last? Seagate warranty periods are 1 year, 2 years, 3 years or 5 years from the documented date of purchase, depending on the type of product and where it was purchased.

    11 years is crazy long.

edit: maybe it's until 2011? That'd make sense.

I purchased this hard drive originally in 1999 and the documentation says I am covered until 2010. They replaced my drive once in 2005 and actually sent me a replacement drive before I sent mine back (I told them I couldn't be without a hard drive for finals, which was true, I was basically screwed).

Maybe I just won the warranty lottery or something?

You should always have your important stuff backed up anyway. I wouldn't be too concerned if it is louder but still sounding normal. When it starts clicking or grinding give Seagate a call.

I guess you get a full warranty on the replacement drive.

I'm guessing they also upgraded your old hard drive? I don't think there were any 120GB drives in 1999 (I remember having an 8,4GB one around then and buying a cheap 60GB one sometime in... 2001?).
