Weird PC sound problem

So a couple weeks ago I got a new CPU and motherboard, an E6700 3.20Ghz and an ASUS P5KPL-AM EPU. When I upgraded I ended up getting rid of my old Soundblaster Live! sound card, and now am using onboard sound, a VIA HD 1708 chip.

After the upgrade I started noticing that the sound would go out of sync sometimes. I first noticed it using Netflix streaming, but it happens in pretty much everything. In Netflix, or YouTube, videos there's usually a little crack or hitch sound, and then the audio is de-synced. When just listening to MP3s sometimes if I press stop the song keeps going for a half a second or so. It happens in games and in doing stuff in Windows: sound effects will be a half-second or so behind their associated actions.

The problem always seems to come and go; sometimes only lasting for a few minutes and other times forcing me to reboot entirely. I've made sure my sound and video drivers are up-to-date. The problem seems so broad and random that I'm not even sure where to begin looking to fix it.

You could update the chipset drivers. Also you could stick your Soundblaster Live! back in, because it's probably better.
