Considering solar panels for our property

Hi guys. My father and I own a property in the north east of Germany. It's about 4000 square meters and there is also an empty house standing on it. At the moment it isn't being used for anything and my father and I both live quite far away from it.

Now I've been thinking of fairly passive ways to monetize the land. I noticed that a lot of households in the country side in Germany have photovoltaic cells installed but I'm not really sure where to start. I don't know what kind of costs we're looking at and I also don't know what the return on them would be. The house and land aren't being used so the electricity would just be being sold back to the grid. Is that even viable or do they pay small suppliers shitty rates?

Any help or experiences you've had would be appreciated. Alternative suggestions would be great too if this idea seems bogus.

You are in Germany, unless someone has recently bought panels in Germany they can't comment on this accurately.

They are an expensive outlay and at least in Australia they take about three years to earn the money back.

Your best bet is to call up an installation company and ask them to see the costs and the return rate.

They probably have this on paper.

Germany has laws that guarantee inflated prices for power from renewable sources so the situation might be better than in Australia. Still, it's an investment that will only make money after some time. Blake's advice of contacting some companies is solid. Obviously take their numbers with a grain of salt and shop around.

You probably can't just panel over the whole property because of the local zoning map (Bebauungsplan). That will cut into your revenue, so I really doubt you will make money of this in the short (or even middle) term.

If you want to monetize that property you could sell it (although I know how the housing market is, my parents recently (1-2 years ago) sold a house+property in northeastern Germany, they weren't exactly pleased with the price they got) or try renting it out. That last one of course has it's own share of problems, especially if you aren't local.
